The Liberec tram is one of seven tram networks in the Czech Republic . It is operated by the municipal transport company Dopravní podnik měst Liberce a Jablonce nad Nisou . Originally the network was meter gauge , since 1990 there has been a gradual changeover to regular gauge .

The construction of several new lines is planned (Rochlice – Vesec and Ruprechtice – Pavlovice). Four lines are in operation. The total length of the route is 21.5 kilometers.

Lines

Today, four regular and one historic line are in operation, with line 2 corresponding to a shortened line 3.

history

The meter-gauge tram in Reichenberg, then Austria, opened on August 25, 1897. She drove between the train station and today's zoo . The building went back to the initiative of two manufacturers in 1894. This route largely corresponds to today's line 1. In November of the same year it was extended to the Volksgarten inn (today Lidové sady ) on the northern outskirts. It had a length of 3.5 kilometers and led to the edge of the Jizera Mountains . The line was designed to have two tracks. Due to the narrow streets, however, it partly ran parallel in two streets and had a gradient of up to 10% . In 1899 a second line was laid to the then suburb of Röchlitz (now Rochlice ). In 1904 this line was extended to Rosenthal (today Růžodol ). So this line was 4.2 kilometers long.

In 1900 a uniform tariff was introduced for 12 people Monday to Saturday and 20 people on Sundays. Line 1 cars ran every five minutes, and line 2 cars every ten minutes.

On December 16, 1912, the 5.7 kilometer long line from Tuchplatz through Färbergasse and Adlergasse and the viaduct to Oberhanichen went into operation. It has a gradient of up to seven percent. The concession for this line was subsequently granted on February 16, 1915.

On November 1, 1932, the short connection from the train station through Zittauer Strasse to the viaduct was opened and the route through Adlerstrasse and Färbergasse was abandoned. A continuous line from Volksgarten via the train station to Oberhanichen was now possible.

On December 24, 1934, four lines ran in the city:

  • 1 train station (Nádraží) - Cloth Square (Soukenné náměstí) - People's Garden (Lidové sady)
  • 2 Röchlitz (Rochlice) - Cloth Square (Soukenné náměstí) - Rosenthal I (Růžodol I)
  • 3 Oberhanichen (Horní Hanychov) - Train station (Nádraží) - Cloth square (Soukenné náměstí) - People's garden (Lidové sady)
  • 4 Oberrosenthal (Vápenka) - Bakery (Pekárny) - Train station (Nádraží) - Cloth square (Soukenné náměstí) - People's garden (Lidové sady)

After the end of the Second World War , German-speaking employees were dismissed due to the Beneš decrees and all German-language labels were removed. Director Anton Schlupek was the last to leave the railway in 1946 and move to SWU Verkehr GmbH in Ulm .

Mrštíkova depot (2019)

Between 1948 and 1960 the transport companies of the cities of Liberec and Jablonec nad Nisou existed . Between the three cities of Liberec, Vratislavice and Jablonec, the 12.5 km long overland tram Liberec – Jablonec nad Nisou was opened on December 26, 1956 . During this time, all end points of the lines were equipped with turning loops . On the other hand, this period was also marked by the disintegration of the existing substance. For example, from 1960 onwards at Benešovo náměstí the cars were only allowed to drive at walking speed and without passengers due to the risk of collapse in some buildings . The passengers covered this route on foot.

Between March 27, 1972 and December 29, 1976, the line to Jablonec nad Nisou was modernized. This shortened the journey time from 39 to 27 minutes. On September 1, 1990, the tracks in the city began to be converted to standard gauge . By 1995, a third rail was laid on the Lidové sady viaduct section . The first purely regular-gauge section went into operation on August 30, 1998, and since then all inner-city tram traffic can be handled with regular-gauge vehicles. Since this measure was limited to the city lines, the tram has been running in the city with two different gauges since then. The overland line remained in meter gauge. At the end of the 1990s, people began to think about re-gauging the overland railway. At the same time, the line should also be extended to the cable car in Horní Hanychov .

Planned regiotram Nisa

In 2000 the decision was made to build a light rail system based on the Karlsruhe model as "Regiotram Nisa". The key elements of this project were, on the one hand, to replace the mostly very desolate and only single-track meter-lane tram line between Liberec and Jablonec nad Nisou with a double-track, regular-lane, high-speed light rail line. Another goal was to double- track the local rail connection Zittau ↔ Liberec ↔ Harrachov , which is also only a single-track route , some of which are in very mountainous terrain a few bus stations away from the town centers, and thus to integrate them into the town centers. A third goal in the project was the better connection of the winter sports areas Harrachov and Jakuszyce (PL) to the large urban areas of Liberec and the Polish Jelenia Góra . For this purpose, the former single-track railway line over the New World Pass (Novosvětský průsmyk) should be double-tracked and electrified as a regional tram route. An expansion of the electrified tram service area was planned in several stages: First, the sections to Tanvald and Josefův Důl should be completed. In later sections, the network was to be extended to Jelenia Góra (PL), Železný Brod , Frýdlant v Čechách , Zittau (D) and towards Rumburk . In September 2003, Investorsko inženýrská as won the public tender from the Czech Liberec region to coordinate the project until 2009. The main task of the coordination was to ensure a whole range of activities, from project management, through the proposal of a financing model, to proof of the Feasibility of the project, securing construction investors and engineering activities for the buildings and marketing, up to the preparation of the whole system. However, from the current point of view, a realization is no longer to be expected in the near future, as the priority of this project was downgraded by the Czech Ministry of Transport for financial reasons.
