Vratislavice nad Nisou (German Maffersdorf ) is a city district ( Liberec-Vratislavice nad Nisou ) and district ( Liberec XXX-Vratislavice nad Nisou ) of Liberec ( Reichenberg ) in the Czech Republic . It is located on both sides of the Lusatian Neisse between Liberec and Jablonec nad Nisou ( Gablonz ), about 3.5 km southeast of Liberec city center.

history

The place Wratislawicz was probably created in the 13th century left of the Neisse by Bohemian colonists. From 1460 the settlement is documented, which at the time had a brick church. In the 16th century, German settlers immigrated from the northern part of the Jizera Mountains , who built another place on the right bank of the Neisse, which was named after their home village Meffersdorf (today: Pobiedna ). The villages to the right and left of the river were independent places and belonged to different rulers ( Reichenberg , Böhmisch Aicha ). Over the years the place name developed to Maffersdorf , this name has been transferred to the village on the left of the Neisse since the Thirty Years War and the name Wratislawicz has been forgotten.

Maffersdorf on the right of the Neisse, also known as the Reichenberger side , grew steadily. In 1701 the new parish church was built according to plans by the Prague builder Marco Antonio Canevalle .

In the second half of the 19th century, industrialization began in both parts. In 1871 Franz Peukert founded a company, which he later expanded into a renowned company for butchery equipment. The Eduard Stiassny porcelain factory was established in 1896 . The carpet and blanket factory founded by Ignaz Ginzkey and continued by his son Wilhelm Ginzkey had an international reputation. In 1924 the Ginzkey company delivered the largest carpet in the world to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York .

Since the discovery of a healing spring in 1862, bathing was soon started in the village on the left of the Neisse. In 1913, the bath owner Rudolf merged with the owner of the second Weber mineral water fountain, which was built in 1866. In 1918, however, the owner of the spa in Bad Liebwerda bought the spa in Maffersdorf in order to discontinue the rival business.

The Reichenberger beer brewery and malt factory in Maffersdorf on the right of the Neisse, founded in 1872 as a stock corporation , was known for its good beer. Both communities, which belonged to the Bohemian district administration Reichenberg, had a total of 4,910 inhabitants in 1880.

With the local railway line of the Reichenberg - Gablonz - Tannwalder Eisenbahn AG founded in 1888, inaugurated on July 12, 1894, two railway stations (Maffersdorf and Dörfel) were created on the Maffersdorf corridor to the left of the Neisse.

On July 14, 1901, the two communities merged to form the market town of Maffersdorf, which in 1939 had 6,234 inhabitants.

In 1919 the place came to the newly founded Czechoslovakia ; the name Vratislavice was used again. In 1938 the place was occupied by the German Reich as part of the Sudetenland .

After the Second World War, the almost exclusively German population was expelled. In 1951 the tramway project between Liberec and Jablonec , which had been planned since 1900, was implemented, which from then on connected Vratislavice with both cities. After 1970 there was a temporary cessation of tram traffic because the tracks were in a very poor condition. The route is being used again today by the Liberec transport company .

In 1956 Vratislavice was raised to the rank of town and in 1980 it was incorporated into Liberec (today Liberec XXX ). In 1991 the place had 6,054 inhabitants. In 2001 Vratislavice consisted of 1007 houses in which 6657 people lived.

Local division

Vratislavice nad Nisou forms the city district Liberec-Vratislavice nad Nisou and at the same time the district Liberec XXX-Vratislavice nad Nisou and a cadastral district of the city of Liberec. It is divided into the ten basic settlement units Císařský kámen ( Kaiserstein ), Nová Ruda-sever, Nová Ruda-střed, Prosečský hřeben ( Proschwitzkammhäuser ), Tyršův vrch, U cihelny, U pivovaru, U vysílačky, Vodice-střlavice and Vyslavice-ob.

economy

After the Communists took over from power in the Velvet Revolution , the transition to a market economy caused major problems for some companies. The brewery ( Vratislav brand ) founded in 1872 was so run down that it had to close in 1998. After two years of shutdown, the company, which had meanwhile been bought up by the Hols company, was put back into operation with the support of numerous friends of Maffersdorfer beer in the summer of 2000 and the new Konrad beer brand was presented. In 2003 the Hols brewery's sales were again 65,000 hectoliters. In October 2004, a classic car museum of the citizens' association Auto-Museum was built on the brewery site .

The beer brand Stara Bohemia , which is produced exclusively for the German supermarket chain Netto Marken-Discount , is also a product of Pivovar Konrad in Vratislavice.

Other drinks are also produced in Vratislavice. Vratislavická kyselka sro, which is owned by UNIPO as Pardubice , produces mineral water ( Vratislavická kyselka ) and other non-alcoholic drinks.

Porsche Museum

Since 2016, the Porsche Museum has been commemorating the town's most famous son, the vehicle designer Ferdinand Porsche . It was set up in the house where he was born at Tanvaldská 38 (until 1945: Hauptstraße 38) and shows the history of this Maffersdorf family and the inventions of Porsche.

But the story of the car pioneer begins in a completely different place: In Maffersdorf, near today's Liberec. Now this is being honored with a small but fine museum.
