The Ostrava-Svinov – Kyjovice-Budišovice railway was a railway connection in the Czech Republic that is now operated as an interurban tram by the Ostrava tram . The line between the former Poruba station and the end point in Kyjovice - Budišovice is still in operation today . The original route from the Ostrava-Svinov train station (previously: Svinov - Vítkovice / Schönbrunn-Witkowitz) was replaced after the Second World War in favor of a new tram line between the center of Ostrava and Poruba.

history

The original plans for the local railway in Austrian Silesia only included the construction of the Schönbrunn-Witkowitz – Königsberg local railway east of Ostrava . Finally, the municipalities of the Porubka Valley also called for such a railway to improve the unfavorable traffic conditions there. As one of the last private local railways in the Bohemian countries, it was finally approved by the Czechoslovak Ministry of Transport in the early 1920s. The financing of the local railway was largely taken over by the state of Silesia, the remaining 30% of the funds were contributed by the neighboring communities.

Construction work on the new route began in 1923 by the Špačkové brothers from Slezká Ostrava / Silesian Ostrava. In Svinov / Schönbrunn, opposite the state train station, a separate train station with a reception building, locomotive sheds and officials' houses was built. A track connection enabled the exchange of cars with the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). The route was opened in three sections between 1925 and 1927:

  • August 2, 1925: Svinov-Vítkovice-Vřesina
  • November 7, 1926: Vřesina – Dolní Lhota
  • November 6, 1927: Dolní Lhota – Kyjovice-Budišovice

The Silesian State Railways (Slezké zemské dráhy; SZD) took over the operation of the new line .

From October 1, 1938, as a result of the annexation of the Sudetenland to Germany , the route was entirely on German territory. In 1943 the Silesian State Railways sold the line for three million crowns to the Moravian Local Railway Company , which already operated the neighboring local railway to Klimkovice / Königsberg. In the Reich course book, the route was included as KBS 151q Schönbrunn (Oder) –Kiowitz-Budischowitz . The 1944 timetable recorded a total of twelve pairs of trains on weekdays and eight on Sundays. The travel time over the entire route was 36–37 minutes in both directions.

From 1947, the Moravian Local Railway Company, now trading as Společnost moravských místních drah (SMMD), implemented the electrification of the line, which was planned before the Second World War, analogous to the neighboring line to Klimkovice. In Svinov, a track connection to the Ostrava tram network was built to enable continuous traffic. From August 29, 1947 the trams went to Vřesina, from December 29, 1948 to Kyjovice-Budišovice. With the exception of the continued freight traffic, the classic railway operation on the local railway ended.

From 1951 a new large residential area was built in Poruba. The company "Bytostav" entrusted with the construction received its own siding at Poruba station, which was served daily by heavy freight trains. A new double-track tram line was built between Ostrava and Poruba, which ultimately made the original route between Svinov and Poruba superfluous. On September 30, 1970, the line between Svinov and Poruba was closed.

Between 1980 and 1991 the remaining Poruba – Kyjovice – Budišovice line was extensively renovated. At that time, the turning loop was also created at the end point now known as “Zátiší”, in order to be able to use equipment trolleys from now on. The former station buildings were sold to private users.

Today the route is served by line 5 Vřesinská – Zatiší between 3 a.m. and 11 p.m. every 20 to 30 minutes. At the Vřesinská stop there is a connection to the inner-city lines of Ostrava.

Vehicle use

In 1926, the Silesian state railways acquired four used locomotives of the ČSD series 310.1 , eight passenger cars, three freight cars and one company car for operation on the local railway . In 1927 another five passenger cars were added. All traffic up to electrification in 1947/48 was handled with these vehicles.

After electrification, two-axle tram types for bidirectional operation came onto the line. After the turning loop was built at the end point, it was then also possible to use ČKD Tatra equipment trolleys. Today the operation is carried out exclusively with the Tatra K2 and Inekon 01 Trio trams .
