The Brno tram (Czech: Brno ) was the first tram to go into operation on what is now the Czech Republic . Today Brno has the second largest tram network in the Czech Republic after the capital Prague . Locally the railway is called šalina (pronunciation: Schalina).

In 2007, 13 daily lines with a total length of 139 km were in operation. The routes not only run in the urban area, but also lead to the town of Modřice south of Brno . Before the last route extension went into operation in 2008, the route network measured 69.7 km. The tram operator is the Brno City Transport Company Dopravní podnik města Brna (DPMB).

The operating company

The operator of the tram, as well as other public transport facilities ( trolleybuses and buses ) in Brno, is the Brno City Transport Company Dopravní podnik města Brna akciová společnost (DPMB). This company was founded as a stock corporation on January 1, 1998. She took over the tasks of the legal predecessor Dopravní podnik města Brna . The city of Brno is the sole shareholder. The company also operates passenger shipping on the Brněnská přehrada reservoir .

history

The first horse tram

After Vienna (1865), Pest (1866), Buda (1868) and Timișoara (July 1869), Brno was the fifth city in what was then Austria-Hungary and the first city in what is now the Czech Republic to have a horse-drawn tram . On August 17, 1869, the first line went into operation. It led from Lažanský Square (today's name: Moravské náměstí = Moravian Square) to the then still independent municipality of Královo Pole, north of the city center . The operator was the Brno Tramway Company for Passenger and Freight Traffic . At the start of operations, only six cars were available. Gradually, the company bought a total of 53 cars for passenger and ten for goods traffic. Operations were stopped again in 1874.

The second horse tram

The Brno tram company opened a route from the main train station to Pisárky in June 1876, and a second route was added a little later. Both routes were only used in the summer half of the year, and operations had to be stopped again in October 1880 for reasons of profitability.

Steam tram

In 1886 the first steam trams were put into operation by the Brno Steam Tramway , but the switch to electrical operation began as early as 1900. Steam locomotives were still in use in Brno for freight traffic until 1914.

Start of the electric tram

Since the system of steam trams in Brno worked well, the switch to electrical operation was made relatively late, compared to Prague and some smaller cities (e.g. Teplitz-Schönau / Teplice , Reichenberg / Liberec and Olomouc / Olomouc ).

The first electrified lines went into operation on June 21, 1900. 41  railcars and 41  sidecars were available , the latter were taken over from the steam train with the exception of 12 new vehicles. The operator was the Brno Electric Trams Company . In the first year of operation, new lines were built so that 5 lines could soon be offered.

When the company got into financial difficulties in 1914, it was taken over by the Österreichische Elektrizitäts Lieferungs Aktiengesellschaft from Vienna. During the First World War, expansion was hardly to be thought of. Only one stretch was extended - up to a hospital.

The heyday of the Brno tram

After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, Společnost brněnských pouličních drah (Brno Trams Company) took over the operation. Your main task was initially to improve the run-down railways and routes. From 1924 new lines were built, later the focus was on building a second track on previously single-track lines.

In 1938 eight routes were in operation. In 1942 the local railway Brno – Lösch , a classic railway, was taken over and converted into a tram line through electrification . In 1998, as part of the extension of line 8, the first and so far only underground station Jirova in the Brno – Lišeň district (Brno – Lösch) was put into operation.

Trivia

The tram in Brno is popularly referred to as "šalina". This word is a corruption of the earlier German term “Elektrolinie”, whereby the Czech spelling of the pronunciation of this expression is “elektriŠE LÍNYe”.

For the renewal of the vehicle fleet, the operator DPMB announced in autumn 2019 that it intends to acquire up to 40 new vehicles. They should have a length of approx. 30 m and a width of around 2.50 m. In addition, space for up to 230 passengers with at least 60 seats is required.

10 used Tatra T6A5 vehicles were purchased from the Prague Transport Company. They were delivered to Brno in June 2019 and after the renovation, the first vehicles were used for the first time towards the end of October 2019. One vehicle is cannibalized as a spare parts donor, a second is used as a shunting vehicle in one of the depots. Four double traction trains are formed from the 8 renovated or still to be renovated vehicles.
