Until 1903, Überwasser was a municipality in the Münster district of the Prussian province of Westphalia . Today your area belongs to the city of Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The municipality of Überwasser comprised the western and north-western area around the city of Münster. It initially had an area of ​​43.3 km² and after 1875 an area of ​​39.6 km². The Münster districts of Gievenbeck , Kinderhaus , Kreuzviertel , Sandrup , Sentrup , Sprakel and Uppenberg are located in the former municipal area .

The community of Überwasser emerged from the parish of Überwasser , to which the four old farmers Gievenbeck, Sandrup, Sprakel and Uppenberg belonged. The Überwasserkirche , eponymous parish church of the parish, was not located in the territory of the municipality of Überwasser, but has always been in the city of Münster.

After the Napoleonic era , the area of ​​the municipality of Überwasser initially belonged to the Mauritz mayor in the Münster district founded in 1816. With the introduction of the Westphalian rural community order in 1843, the Mauritz mayor's office became the Mauritz office .

Since the middle of the 19th century, the urban development of Münster expanded increasingly to include the community of Überwasser. In 1875 the urbanized outskirts of Überwasser were incorporated into the city of Münster. In 1903 the community was finally dissolved. Kinderhaus, Gievenbeck, Sentrup and Uppenberg were incorporated into the city of Münster, while Sandrup and Sprakel came to the municipality of St. Mauritz .

Today, Überwasser is the name of a district (Statistical District 12) in the city center of Münster in the Mitte district . It encompasses the old town around the Überwasserkirche and is not in the area of ​​the former municipality of Überwasser.
