The Üdersee is a 5 km long and up to 400 m wide channel lake that was created in the Vistula Ice Age . At the northeast end of the lake is the place Werbellin . The federal motorway 11 runs 400 to 900 meters away to the south-east, almost parallel to the lake.
Emergence
The Üdersee was created in the last Ice Age ( Weichsel Ice Age ) as a typical channel lake . The meltwater flowing under the ice eroded heavily into the subsoil, creating the hollow shape. Dead ice was then pressed into the channel. The dead ice lying in the channel preserved the steep flanks of the channel. It also saved the channel from being buried when the meltwater flowed from the northern Pomeranian ice edge over the dead ice block to the Eberswalde glacial valley .
use
At the southern end of the lake, the “Röthen” campsite is located between the lake and the Oder-Havel Canal. South of the campsite is the outflow of the lake in the form of a so-called puncture under the canal towards the Finow Canal.
The campsite has a large sandy beach that, like all the shores of the lake, is relatively steep. A height radar from the Soviet Army was installed opposite the beach until the fall of the Wall.
In the GDR era, many bungalows were built around almost the entire lake. Only the north-east bank is undeveloped.
Motorboats are prohibited on the Üdersee.
At the northern end of the Üdersee there is a smaller beach near Werbellin.
Friends of Nature House
The Naturfreundehaus, which opened in 1930, is located on the lake. After it was confiscated by the National Socialists, from June 29, 1933 it was the “First Reich School of Labor Service for Young Women”. In the post-war period, this house was the "Üdersee Youth School", where 1230 young teachers were trained. Afterwards it was used as a "ZK home" by the SED as a holiday home. The house received its own motorway exit at kilometer 31, which was closed again after the fall of the Wall.
