history

Around 1284 Slavs settled in what is now the nearby village of Finowfurt. The neighboring village of Lichterfelde is mentioned for the first time in 1277 in a certificate of donation from the Chorin monastery . It is assumed that Werbellin was inhabited by Slavs, but has not yet been proven. The Ascanians built in nearby Wildau under Otto III. a castle. The area around Werbellin was a popular hunting spot for the Ascanians, which was used equally by both branches of Brandenburg after the division of the country. At the southwest end of the Werbellinsee they maintained the Werbellin Castle. It was at the mouth of today's Werbellink Canal into the lake.

The village emerged after the Thirty Years War . The Prussian King Friedrich II. Settled 18 families from Zweibrücken in the Palatinate in the village on July 24, 1748 . The founding deed was signed by Frederick the Great himself. After the city of Joachimsthal , Werbellin was the second village near the Werbellin lake. The name was taken from the lake.

Werbellin was incorporated into Finowfurt on December 30, 1997 . On October 26, 2003, the new community of Schorfheide was created through the merger of the communities Finowfurt and Groß Schönebeck .
