Wildau belongs to the community of Schorfheide in the Barnim district ( Brandenburg ). In organizational terms, Wildau is assigned to the Eichhorst district . Wildau is located at the southwestern end of the Werbellinsee at the mouth of the Werbellink Canal . Tourism is of increasing importance for the place, the long-distance cycle route Berlin – Usedom leads through the place and past Café Wildau .

In addition to a sailing and a canoe harbor and a few bungalows, there are only a few residential buildings and a replica of an Askanier tower .

history

The former Askanier settlement Wildau was surrounded by swamps. At the time of the Ascanian margrave Otto III. ("The Pious"), Werbellin Castle was built on the so-called Schlossberg. However, this mountain is only a small elevation of a few meters. At that time there were three castles around the Werbellinsee, Grimnitz in today's Joachimsthal, Breden Castle in today's Altenhof and Werbellin. Werbellin Castle was abandoned in the 14th century and, over time, destroyed to the ground. Nothing is left of the 13th century castle today.

Wildau was incorporated into Eichhorst in 1927. Before that the place belonged administratively to Grimnitz.

Askanier tower

After the local poet Ferdinand Brunold from Joachimsthal had the idea of an observation tower at the southwestern end of the Werbellinsee, Carl von Prussia had it built as an Askanier tower in 1879 . The tower and Schloßberg Wildau have been under monument protection since 1974. The area around the tower was heavily overgrown in GDR times and hardly accessible. The tower was reconstructed in 1991 by foresters from Eberswalde and local friends of the Schorfheide. It can no longer be used as a lookout tower, as the surrounding forest prevents a clear view of the lake.
