Observation tower

The Askanier Tower is a 12 meter high observation tower on the southwestern bank of the Werbellinsee . It stands on a hill, the Schlossberg, on the southeast edge of Wildau in the Barnim district in Brandenburg . Wildau belongs as a locality of Eichhorst to the community Schorfheide .

history

The round tower made of field stone with a balcony and a brick crenellated crown was built according to an idea by the local poet Friedrich Brunold (actually August Ferdinand Meyer), who lives in Joachimsthal . For the project of the Askanier Tower, he won over Prince Carl of Prussia , with whose support the tower could be built and inaugurated on October 2, 1879. The prince also arranged for the land to be purchased from the Bernoulli brick and cement factory. The Eberswalde master builder Oskar Büscher was commissioned to erect the tower .

The name of the tower refers to the construction of the Werbellin castle on the Schlossberg under the rule of the Ascanians in the 13th century. In the middle of the 18th century, building remains and medieval weapons were found during the construction of the Werbellink Canal by Frederick the Great . Architectural historians assume that the castle was destroyed by fire until the middle of the 14th century (1319, 1325?). There is also no precise information about the construction time of the approximately 30 × 30 meter large castle, generally the time between 1211 and 1215 under the Margrave Albrecht II of Brandenburg is assumed, but also a somewhat later construction time under the common Margrave Johann I. and Otto III. is not excluded. Werbellin Castle was first mentioned in 1247.

Since 1974 the Schlossberg von Wildau with the Askanier Tower has been under monument protection . The tower was reconstructed in 1991 by foresters from Eberswalde and local friends of the Schorfheide.

In 2009 the tower and its surroundings served as the backdrop for the fairy tale film Rapunzel with Suzanne von Borsody as the sorceress.
