Rock bastion of Þyrill |
Þyrill is a volcanic mountain in the west of Iceland . It reaches a height of 388 m and is located on the northeast side of the Hvalfjörður fjord near a whaling station .
Surname
The name Þyrill means whorl in German . This is explained by the air eddies that can be created at its foot by falling winds from the north.
geology
The heavily eroded mountain includes lower lava and tephra layers from the nearby extinct Hvalfjörður volcano and thinner layers of sediment , the upper layers of which are the remains of three superimposed shield volcanoes from the Ice Age .
The proximity to the former central volcano , the remains of which is contained in the neighboring mountain Brekkukambur , explains the numerous different crystals to be found on the mountain.
Þyrill farm: Sagaschauplatz
The farm of the same name, located below the mountain, appears in the Icelandic Sagas . There it is mentioned as the home of Þorsteinn gullknappur , who killed the outlaw Harður Grímkelsson . From Helga , the wife of the outlaw, it is reported that she was from the island Geirshólmur , swam, which lies in the fjord with two little sons ashore and have saved themselves by flight.
Hiking on the Þyrill
The best way to climb the mountain is from the direction of Botnsdalur . Not far from the intersection with the cul-de-sac into the valley, the Síldarmannagötur long-distance hiking trail (marked) begins on the mountain side and leads over the eastern side of the mountain.
