The ČSD class 434.2 is a freight train locomotive with a tender of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). The locomotives were created by converting locomotives from the 434.0 series (formerly kkStB 170 ).
history
When the kk state railways were divided up after the First World War, 306 locomotives of the 170 series were awarded to ČSD. From 1919 to 1921, another 71 newly built machines were added. These locomotives, classified by ČSD as class 434.0, were therefore available in large numbers, but were not economically convincing. Therefore, in 1924/25, the Škoda works in Plzeň converted 9 machines. The aim of the project was to increase performance by converting a wet steam compound engine to a superheated steam twin locomotive, for which the machines received a superheater and new cylinders with piston valves and a new chimney. Striking optical features were the smoke chamber, which was extended to the front for the installation of the superheater, and the inlet pipes curved backwards from there.
The result of this conversion was an increase in machine performance of almost 20%. Therefore, a further 345 locomotives were modernized in various workshops by 1947. These machines were particularly useful in freight transport in Nymburk , Louny and Plzeň . The locomotives pulled 1400-ton freight trains at 60 km / h on the level. An example of their area of application were the 150-axle bauxite full-length trains from Hungary to Lauta on the Bakov nad Jizerou – Ebersbach railway line in the Lusatian Mountains , supported by three machines from the 434.2 series ( prestressing and pushing locomotive ).
After the Second World War , the locomotives were rebuilt a second time; In the 1960s, many of them received a Giesl ejector , which further increased the performance of the machines. That was also the reason why the machines outlived many more recent designs and were not finally taken out of service until 1980.
The staff gave the series the nickname "Čtyřkolák", which can be translated as "four couplers". The locomotives 434.2298 in the National Technical Museum in Prague , 434.2186 as an operational museum locomotive of the ČD , 434.2218 in the Railway Museum Lužná u Rakovníka and 434.2338 (with Giesl ejector ) in Slovakia have been preserved .
