The ČSD class E 469.1 (from 1988: class 121 ) is an electric freight locomotive of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) for the 3 kV direct current system in the north and east of Czechoslovakia . They emerged from the prototype locomotive of the class E 469.0 , which was a variant of the E 499.1 specially designed for freight train service .

history

Experience with electrical operation on the main routes made it clear at an early stage that the E 499.0 and E 499.1 series locomotives could be better used in passenger train service. For freight transport it was better to use a locomotive with the same performance but a different gear ratio. Therefore, at Škoda in Plzeň, the transmission ratio between the traction motor and the drive wheel of the accident E 499.157 was changed from 2.27: 1 to 3.11: 1. In addition, the service weight was increased to 88 t by a ballast weight. The changes brought the desired success and led to the production of the new class E 469.1 freight locomotive. The prototype locomotive was dismantled again in the 1970s.

In 1960, Škoda produced a total of 85 locomotives in 3 series. From the frontal view, the only difference is an aluminum band between the locomotive body and the frame on the E 469.1 series. This bandage was later removed during main inspections. Otherwise, the mechanical and electrical construction of the locomotives was identical to the E 499.1 . The driver's cab still had only one step, and that was from the left. The last locomotive, the E 469.1085, had a cab made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic as a trial. Characteristic of it were the corrugations in the space between the top windows and the frame of the locomotive.

For decades, the locomotives carried freight trains on the main lines with a slight incline. Due to the presence of the electric heating, they could also take over passenger train services, but this was limited due to the low speed. They were preferred over coal trains on the Ústí nad Labem – Chomutov route , until they were pushed out of their areas of operation by the newer generation of locomotives and declining transport services.

In the last few years of operation, the E 469.1 series locomotives were concentrated in Ústí nad Labem, where they were decommissioned when major damage occurred. Some vehicles have since been reconstructed and sold to private operators.
