The class E 669.0 (from 1988: class 180 ) is a six-axle electric freight locomotive of the former Czechoslovak state railway ČSD for the 3 kV direct current system in the north and east of the former Czechoslovakia . It was developed as a further development from the four-axle series E 499.0 .
Although the performance of this very successful series turned out to be higher than calculated, one locomotive was not enough to carry heavy freight trains over the mountainous sections of the Slovak Tatras. So on May 16, 1957, two prototypes were ordered from Škoda in Pilsen and delivered to ČSD in September 1958 and January 1959. Two almost identical prototypes were also delivered to the USSR , which also needed such a machine.
history
The two prototypes were initially named E 698.001 and E 698.002 and were transferred to the depot Praha hl.n. allocated. Since weighing the locomotive brought more than the required 18 t axle load, the ČSD changed the name of the prototype to E 699.0.
The machines handled freight traffic on the main train of the ČSD from Chomutov to Čierna nad Tisou . They served as the development vehicle for the E 669.1 to E 669.3, which were later developed for this service . It was also shown that a locomotive with a lower gear ratio (and thus lower speed) is more effective for economic freight train service. During a warranty inspection, the bogies including traction motors were exchanged for those of the E 669.1 series at the manufacturer's works , which resulted in a reduction in top speed to 90 km / h. The locomotives were then given the new series number E 669.0.
The two prototypes were used as planned in heavy freight train service until 1996, after which they were only used sporadically. However, they have the status of museum locomotives, so they have been preserved as non-drivable exhibits in Česká Třebová .
