Peter Calmeyer (born September 5, 1930 in Halle , † November 22, 1995 in Berlin ) was a German archaeologist from the Near East .

Peter Calmeyer was the son of Hans Georg Calmeyer and grew up in Osnabrück . In Berlin he studied Classical Archeology , Near Eastern Archeology , Assyriology and Ancient History . Near Eastern Archeology quickly became his main subject. His mentor was Anton Moortgat . In 1965 Calmeyer received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin with a dissertation on the subject of " Datable bronzes from Luristan and Kirmanshah ". Calmeyer then moved to the University of Munich , where he worked as a research assistant and lecturer, his habilitation took place in 1967. In 1972, he became the second director of the Tehran department of the German Archaeological Institute .

In his scientific work, Calmeyer always attached great importance to the use of all sources and interdisciplinary research. Not infrequently, for topographical studies in particular, he resorted to the writings of classical , ancient authors, which he considered to be mostly very appropriate. From 1973 until his death in 1995 he edited the new series of " Archaeological Messages from Iran " and since 1987 has been co-editor of the " Real Lexicon of Assyriology and Near Eastern Archeology ".

Calmeyer was married to the Near Eastern archaeologist Ursula Seidl .

Peter Calmeyer died on November 22nd, 1995, his grave is in the old St.-Matthäus-Kirchhof in Berlin-Schöneberg .
