İmran Öktem

İmran Öktem (* 1904 in Istanbul ; † May 1, 1969 in Ankara ) was a Turkish lawyer and from March 1, 1966 until his death, presiding judge at the Court of Cassation , the highest ordinary court in Turkey .

Life

Öktem was born the son of a fruit trader, Süleyman Abdi Efendi, and his wife Fatımatüzzöhra Hanım in Istanbul's Sekbanbaşı İbrahim Ağa district.

In 1927 he completed his law studies in Istanbul and was appointed to the Public Prosecutor's Office in Göksun, Kahramanmaraş Province . However, he could not accept this post and only became legally active in Sinop on June 30, 1928 . In 1930 he was appointed judge in Sarıkamış , in 1936 a member of the Ankara Commercial Court and in 1942 a judge in Ankara. In 1948 he was appointed President of the Ankara Commercial Court.

From August 29, 1949, after the previous election, Öktem became a member of the Court of Cassation. There he was elected vice-president on October 11, 1952 and presiding judge on March 1, 1966. He held this office until his death on May 1, 1969.

Funeral service

Öktem's funeral and memorial service on May 3, 1969 was overshadowed by protests and tumults. This resulted from the fact that Öktem said in his speech on September 7, 1967, based on Voltaire , that man created God . Thus, for many contemporaries he was considered an unbeliever .

To prevent Öktem from praying the dead , several religiously motivated opponents of Öktem went to the Maltepe Mosque. The imams refused to offer the prayer. Brigadier General Nabi Alpartun drew his weapon to protect İsmet İnönü , who was present and insisted on performing the prayer. Finally, the funeral prayer was presided over by İzzet Gözübüyük.

In response to this incident, lawyers and scholars from all over Turkey demonstrated on May 7, 1969 by running to Anıtkabir .
