The Łazienkowska city motorway ( Trasa Łazienkowska in Polish ) is the mostly intersection-free expressway in Warsaw that was built from 1971 to 1974 and connects the districts of Ochota and Grochów . The name of the route comes from the neighboring Łazienki Park .

history

As early as 1938, the construction of a new street in an east-west direction in the southern part of Warsaw was considered. In the first post-war years, however, priority was given to the construction of today's WZ traffic artery with the Śląsko-Dąbrowski Bridge on the pillars of the blown Kierbedź Bridge.

When the Marszałkowska Dzielnica Mieszkaniowa residential area was built in 1950–1953, a lane was provided for the future street. A new traffic artery was not planned until the 1960s, but because of the austerity measures ordered by the party secretary Władysław Gomułka , the preparations for the construction were stopped. The new party secretary Edward Gierek gave his support to the initiative in 1970 and the construction work was carried out vigorously, which earned him popularity with the Warsaw population.

course

The route starts as Ulica Wawelskae in Ulica Grójecka, when fliegerdenkmal it crosses the roundabout the Ulica Żwirki i Wigury, extends in the tunnel under the Ulica Waryńskiego, marszałkowska street and Ujazdów Avenue, on the 840 m long viaducts to the new Łazienkowski bridge and further on the right bank of the Vistula along the Aleja Stanów Zjednoczonych to the Grochów district.

The route was built with two three-lane roads with asphalt paving. The capacity was calculated at 5000 vehicles per hour, which was soon exceeded.

The building project was officially opened on the national holiday, July 22nd 1974. On February 14, 2015, there was a fire in the wooden cladding of the pipes and cables under the Łazienkowski Bridge. The steel structure suffered irreparable deformations, which required an exchange of the entire bridge structure. The reconstruction took place until October 28, 2015.
