Tomoko Ohta
Tomoko Ohta ( Japanese 太 田 朋 子 Ōta Tomoko , born September 7, 1933 ) is a Japanese molecular biologist .
Life
Ohta is a student of Motoo Kimura . There, at the National Institute of Genetics at the University of North Carolina , she received her PhD in 1967. She became known for her work on the neutral theory of molecular evolution . In particular, she developed an extension of the theory founded by Kimura, the Nearly neutral theory of molecular evolution (Nearly neutral theory of molecular evolution).
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences named Ohta a member in 1984. In 2002 she was accepted into the National Academy of Sciences and honored as a person with special cultural merit . In 2015 she was awarded the Crafoord Prize for Life Sciences and in 2016 the Order of Culture .
