Şirin Tekeli

Şirin Tekeli (* 1944 in Ankara ; † June 13, 2017 in Bodrum ) was one of the leading feminist authors and activists of the second feminist movement in Turkey.

Life

Şirin Tekeli was the only child of two philosophy teachers. She first studied in Ankara , then continued her studies in political science in Paris and at the universities of Lausanne , Istanbul and Iowa . From 1968 she taught at the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University. She received her doctorate in 1973 and qualified as a professor in 1978.

Tekeli resigned in 1981 in protest against purges and political restrictions and started her career as a feminist activist, translator and author. In 1982 she published her habilitation thesis as the book Kadınlar ve Siyasal-Toplumsal Hayat , the first book in the Turkish language, which dealt with the marginalization of women in Turkey in society and politics. In 1996 she was awarded the Officier dans l 'Ordre des Palmes Académiques in France .

She lived as a freelance scientist in Bodrum, Turkey.

  • 1997: Founder of KA-DER, Kadın Adayları Destekleme ve Eğitme Derneği (Association for the Support of Women in Politics)
