α-Bungarotoxin Isoform V31 is a protein and neurotoxin from the snake Bungarus multicinctus .

properties

α-Bungarotoxin is produced in the poison gland. It binds and inhibits nicotinic acetylcholine receptors . It is an antagonist in particular of muscular alpha-1 / CHRNA1 and neuronal alpha-7 / CHRNA7. By binding up to two molecules of α-bungarotoxin, the binding of acetylcholine is inhibited. However, binding of one molecule is sufficient to inhibit the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. In contrast to the related κ-bungarotoxin , α-bungarotoxin does not inhibit the ciliary ganglion of chickens. Like κ-bungarotoxin, α-bungarotoxin has a postsynaptic effect , while β-bungarotoxin has a presynaptic effect. Due to its structure, α-bungarotoxin is counted among the three-finger toxins. It has five disulfide bridges .
