Chananel ben Chushiel
Rabbi Elchanan or Chananel ben Khushiel ( Hebrew רבי חננאל בן חושיאל) (* 990; † around 1055) from Kairouan was the son of Chushiel ben Elchanan . He is also used with RaCh (ר"ח), an acronym for Ra bbi Ch ananel (ר בי ח ננאל).
He headed a major Talmudic college in Kairouan. Chananel wrote a commentary on the whole Babylonian Talmud with v. a. Halachic interest in knowledge, which is still partially preserved, namely on Mo'ed (whole) as well as Naschim , Nesikin , Berachot. The commentary not only contains word explanations, but also summarizes the discussion and uses literature to illuminate the text. In addition to his father, Chananel also refers to Hai Gaon ben Scherira . A small part of his Bible commentary is still preserved. He was also considered an authority on legal issues, but his decisions are only preserved in quotations from other scholars.
His work was also widespread in Christian Europe and thus connected the Jewish communities there, especially influenced by Palestine, with the Babylonian tradition of the Geonim and the North African scholarly culture .

Individual evidence
- ↑ According to a widespread hypothesis, “Elchanan” is the original name, which was changed to “Chananel” in order to avoid confusion with other Kairouan and Maghreb scholars, cf. Schechter as early as 1899; Changer 2010.
