(1001) Gaussia is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on August 8, 1923 by the Russian astronomer Sergei Ivanovich Beljawski at the Crimean Observatory in Simejis .
The asteroid was named after the German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauß .
