(1636) Porter is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on January 23, 1950 by the German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory of the University of Heidelberg .
The asteroid is named after the two British amateur astronomers Jermain Gildersleeve Porter and John Guy Porter .
