(1743) Schmidt is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels as part of the Palomar-Leiden Survey .

The name of the asteroid is derived from the Estonian optician Bernhard Schmidt , who developed the Schmidt telescope named after him .
