(1777) Gehrels is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels as part of the Palomar-Leiden Survey .
The asteroid is named after the Dutch-born US astronomer Tom Gehrels , one of the discoverers of the planetoid and coinitiator of the Palomar-Leiden survey.
