(3499) Hoppe is an asteroid that was discovered on November 3, 1981 by Freimut Börngen and K. Kirsch from the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg . Alternative names for the asteroid are 1981 VW 1 and 1979 KT.
The asteroid was named after the German astronomer Johannes Hoppe (* 1907) who became professor of astronomy at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena in 1959 .
