.wien is a new top-level domain for Internet addresses (domains) for companies, organizations and private individuals with reference to the city of Vienna, similar to the .at domain for Internet addresses with reference to Austria. The administration of the domain is registered through punkt.wien GmbH , a wholly owned subsidiary of Compass Group GmbH .

history

In autumn 2011, the City of Vienna was looking for an operator to apply to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for the top-level domain .wien . As a result, punkt.wien GmbH received a license agreement from the City of Vienna to apply as the administrator and marketer of the domain. The application was, among others, from the Professional Association of Management Consulting and Information Technology (UBIT) of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce , the Vienna Industrialists , of the Vienna Tourist Board , the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology and the ISPA support. On October 28, 2013, ICANN and punkt.wien GmbH signed the contract for .wien as - together with .berlin - the first geographical top-level domain worldwide.

The top-level domain .wien went into operation on February 11, 2014 . At the beginning of March 2014, the responsible city councilor Christian Oxonitsch presented seestadt.wien and smartcity.wien as the first websites . The domains were assigned in several phases. In a first phase, trademark owners could register until April 30, 2014. In a second phase, interested parties could register without proof of rights. The domain names submitted were then allocated from July 2, 2014. Since July 15, 2014, open registration has been possible for all domains that are still available. Domains can be registered by legal or natural persons who can prove connections to the city of Vienna. Registration does not take place directly via punkt.wien GmbH , but via a registrar accredited by ICANN .

As of July 26, 2016, 15,210 domains were registered. According to the trade journal iX, the domain was in fifth place among the German-speaking new top-level domains , after .berlin, .bayern, .koeln and .hamburg .

properties

A .wien domain name can be between one and 63 characters long, whereby domains with one or two characters are subject to special conditions and are not assigned as of July 28, 2016. The domain name may only consist of the lowercase letters a to z, the digits 0 to 9 and hyphens, whereby the name may neither begin nor end with a hyphen. For internationalized domain names (IDN), the maximum length is defined by RFCs 5890 and 5891.
