10000 Flies - The Social Media News Charts is an online service that works as an aggregator . It publishes daily charts (ranking lists) of the posts that have received the most likes, shares, clicks and comments on social networks or links within Twitter messages. According to the provider, such a ranking of topics and articles also provides an overview of which articles are particularly successful on which news websites, specialist media and blogs. 10000 Flies is a project by active value GmbH and Jens Schröder . The name "10000 Flies" alludes ironically to the aspect of popularity : "A lot of attention, many 'flies' (English flies ), which revolve around an object".

history

The journalist, author ( Meedia , ZDF blog Hyperland) and data analyst Jens Schröder, who was responsible for the German blog charts until 2012 , founded the first German Google+ charts in 2011 together with the Düsseldorf agency active value . This collaboration resulted in 10000 Flies in January 2013 . When it was launched, the 10000 Flies Charts were traded as a Rivva alternative.

The operators are planning commercial use of the portal, but intend to continue to offer the charts free of charge: "The ranking will always remain free, but we want to offer companies special analyzes that are subject to a fee."

Since February 20, 2013, 10000 Flies has been offering its own analysis for blogs only.

functionality

10,000 Flies employees do extensive research in social networks and permanently determine a response from media and blogs. Such media are entered into the system. From that point on, their contents are completely recorded by 10000 flies . For a media list created by Schröder, the company activ value has programmed software that remembers all articles that are published on these media pages. The numbers of likes, shares, comments, tweets and +1s are determined using the official API interfaces from Google, Twitter and Facebook. The charts created at night are available at 9 a.m. and are published as a list with the 50 most frequently mentioned articles in the networks. According to the operators' own statements, "no relevant source is missing" and the number of sources is in the four-digit range. All German-language content would be included in the rating: texts, videos and audios. Every reaction in the social networks is rated equally. The total number of all likes, tweets , comments and + 1s - based on the name of the website - are called flies. 10000 Flies runs a blog with regular updated analyzes and background information. Two RSS feeds are also offered: one for the blog content and one in which the top 10 of the 10000 Flies charts are listed daily after publication. According to the operator, 10000 Flies is not intended to be a simple news aggregator, but rather an offer with added value that is implemented through rankings, analyzes, reports and an archive. The sound barrier of 10,000 does not reach an average of ten contributions per month. The first chart-topping since the portal was launched was an article in The European by journalist Birgit Kelle with the title "Then close your blouse!" , which achieved over 100,000 likes, shares and comments in a short time.

“10000flies.de provides information about topics that are successful in social media, but also about successful media. And amazes with chart successes for small websites and supposedly insignificant topics that received more echo on the social web than some classic news. " (Thomas Lückerath, DWDL.de )

criticism

The self-imposed quality standard is doubted because jumpers and sport are so dominant, in contrast to the editorial blog, which is certainly certified to have this quality.
