112 - They save your life was a German daily soap in the style of an action series , which was broadcast Monday to Friday at 5 p.m. on RTL from 2008 to 2009 . The episodes lasted 22 minutes each and dealt with the cooperation between the fire brigade , police , rescue service and a helicopter on a common watch in various scenarios .

background

The series has been produced in Hürth-Kalscheuren near Cologne since February 14, 2008 , but is set in Düsseldorf. The production company was action concept . A 500 m² television studio was built on the production site for the interior shots. The exterior shots of the guard show fire station 6 in the state capital Düsseldorf. Some scenes, especially pile-ups or car accidents, were shot on FTL Germany .

First, RTL commissioned 50 episodes of the action soap , and after the first samples had been submitted, 30 more were commissioned. Despite the moderate success, a further 30 episodes were ordered, so that a total of 110 episodes were produced. The last episode aired on February 5, 2009.

Charisma

The series first aired in 2008. Due to the audience ratings that remained below expectations, the series was discontinued after the 110th episode of a season was broadcast in 2009 and no further episodes were produced.

Years after it was first broadcast, parts of the series were repeatedly released on YouTube . However, they were repeatedly deleted from RTL. In the course of a deletion campaign in 2015, all 110 episodes were shown free of charge on RTL Now for a few months . In the process, however, you needed a subscription to see the episodes.

The episodes have been shown on RTL Plus since 2019 and can also be viewed free of charge on TV NOW.

fire Department

Operations and security management

Regularly present at the station are a dispatcher , the head of the department Nils Sellmann, the head of administration Dr. Kristin Driesen, the secretaries Jenny Sauer, Franka Tiefenthal and rescue helicopter pilot Peter Wells.

Episode roles

In addition to the main cast, there was a large side cast for episode roles. In total, over 150 actors played accident victims, witnesses and perpetrators in the individual episodes of the series. Many episodic actors have appeared in other film and TV formats in the past, but there have also been some newcomers.

criticism

Experts complained that the series could not be reconciled in the least with reality. Although this is not infrequently the case with series of this kind, the makers of 112 - You Save Your Life would have far exceeded the tolerable level in the eyes of many fire fighters, rescue service employees and police officers.

In particular, first aid trainers from the aid organizations feared that spectators would use the measures shown there in emergencies and thus represent a real danger to others.

The series is also full of "craftsmanship"; so the emergency services regularly move out in different vehicles than those later available at the scene, and the head of the station is called by different names. The blind dispatcher also reacts to the nods of her colleagues. A secondary horn can be heard during emergency trips , but the blue lights are switched off. In reality, the blue lights are always activated when the secondary horn is switched on.

The job of Steffi (" Paramedic ") does not exist in Germany. In Germany, at the time of production, the paramedic was the most extensive non-medical training in the rescue service.

It is unrealistic to accommodate the police, fire brigade, rescue service and control center in the same building without spatial separation. In reality, this is not possible because statutory regulations and service regulations e.g. B. for security reasons the clear spatial separation of a police station from its surroundings and an entrance with a lock function mandatory. In Germany there are such station wagons in which a police station is integrated, but there the station is optically separated. The joint management of the rescue organizations shown in the series is also hardly feasible in reality, since the implementation of these tasks is legally based on different administrative levels. The police are subordinate to the respective federal state (interior minister), the rescue service is incumbent on the district (district administrator, can either be carried out independently or transferred to aid organizations and commercial enterprises), and the fire brigades are set up by the municipalities (mayors).

The medical measures carried out in series and the use of medical equipment are also unrealistic. For example, a ventricular fibrillation is detected with a stethoscope (which is not possible), the treatment is carried out with "saline solution" (which lies on the floor and should therefore flow uphill into the patient). An ECG analysis is not performed and a defibrillator is not used. The lack of reference to reality manifests itself in numerous other operational situations.

Furthermore, the mixing of police and non-police security could have negative effects on the acceptance and behavior of the population towards non-police security. If the assumption of neutrality towards the fire brigade, rescue service and disaster control is no longer given, employees in this area run the risk of being confused with the police authorities. This can u. a. lead to mistrust and problems in patient groups who have an interest in secrecy .

Trivia

The opening credits were filmed at the main fire station of the Wuppertal - Elberfeld professional fire department . The ambulance seen in the series is a former ambulance of the Wuppertal fire department.
