13 Voices is the sixth studio album by the Canadian rock band Sum 41 . It is the first album under their new record label Hopeless Records and was released worldwide on October 7, 2016. It is also the first album after the release of Screaming Bloody Murder in 2011. For the first time, the drum recordings are no longer by founding member Steve Jocz, who left the band in April 2013. Musically, the album follows its predecessor Screaming Bloody Murder and is characterized by influences from alternative rock , punk and metal .

History of origin

Replacement of the band

After several tours following the release of Screaming Bloody Murder , drummer Steve Jocz announced his departure from the band on Facebook and Twitter . Frank Zummo replaced him as a permanent member, initially after a few appearances as a tour musician. In addition, ex-guitarist Dave Baksh rejoined after leaving in 2006. Since the founding of Sum 41, the band consists of five members for the first time.

Themes and motifs

Thematically, the album deals primarily with the alcohol addiction that frontman Deryck Whibley has overcome. In 2014 he was admitted to hospital with liver and kidney failure. During the subsequent therapy, the prospect of the new album gave him strength, as he announced in several interviews.

“I had to learn how to do everything again - my motor skills, learning how to play guitar again… I couldn't even walk at the time. It was really difficult, but at the same time if I didn't have a record to make, I don't think I would have recovered as quickly. Writing music gave me a purpose. I had to get better. "

“I had to learn everything from scratch - my motor skills, playing the guitar ... I couldn't even walk at the time. It was really difficult, but I wouldn't have recovered that quickly if I hadn't had an album to record. Writing music gave me meaning. I just had to get back on my feet. "

- Deryck Whibley

In addition to his experiences, Whibley was primarily inspired by films for the writing process. For this he saw works by Quentin Tarantino , Tim Burton and others without sound and accompanied the action with improvisations on the guitar. This results in numerous instrumental passages in the album that could just as easily serve as a soundtrack for a film.

Recording and production

The recordings for 13 Voices dragged on over several years and took place mainly in Whibley's own home ( Studio Mr. Biz ). Since after the release of Screaming Bloody Murder the contract with Island Records ended, they were initially without a supporting record label. A crowdfunding campaign on the PledgeMusic platform is therefore used for financing . There, fans could invest in various products in advance, such as signed pressings of the published album, merchandise items or Skype conversations with the band members. They were rewarded with regular video updates on the current recording process.

While Whibley, as with the two previous albums, acted again as producer and directed the recordings, the entire album was mixed by Tom Lorde-Alge , the master then produced (as with the predecessor Screaming Bloody Murder ) Ted Jensen .

expenditure

In addition to the regular edition of the album on CD, a deluxe edition with four other tracks (including an acoustic reinterpretation of War and Breaking the Chain ) in digipack format was also released. In addition, different colored pressings of vinyl records have been published worldwide . In Germany, a limited edition of 500 pieces is available in the color purple .

reception

The professional world was partly positively surprised by 13 voices and gave mediocre to good ratings in their reviews. EMP , a German merchandise and online store for punk and metal, honored the album with a nomination for album of the week . Kai Butterweck wrote in his review on laut.de:

“Sum 41 are back with a record that will not change the industry, but which offers little target. The sound comes out bold, the hooks stay in the ear and the dark undertone makes many pop-punk fillers of the past forgotten. "

- Kai Butterweck : laut.de

Leonie Wiethaup from stageload.org states, especially with regard to the release of other bands in the genre:

“Completely in contrast to their 90s pop-punk colleagues Simple Plan, Green Day or Blink-182, who have already been able to delight the world with their new albums in the last few weeks and months (more or less), Sum 41 did not given over to light fare. [...] The gentlemen around Deryck Whibley skilfully switch from punk rock to pop rock, but never forget their old friend, pop punk. Just as little as the metal bonds that they still like to spread - albeit in a very dosed manner. "

- Leonie Wiethaup : Stageload

Your colleague Luis from minutenmusik.de adds that

“The album [for a fan of the band] is probably just the thing [is]: It will continue as before! The songs offer new ideas without changing the style of the previous albums. "
