1987 is the seventh studio album by the British hard rock band Whitesnake . In the US and Canada it was released as Whitesnake , while the Japanese version was titled Serpens Albus . The album was released in April 1987 and marked the band's breakthrough on the American market.
history
Since on the tour for the album Slide It In (1984) more and more differences between David Coverdale and Cozy Powell had come to light, Powell left the band after the last concert of the tour at the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil . Coverdale had already toyed with the idea of breaking up the band, but his record company persuaded him to at least keep working with guitarist John Sykes .
In the spring of 1985 they both traveled to the south of France to write material for a new album. As a result, two songs came out: Still of the Night and Is This Love . Coverdale and Sykes later went to Los Angeles with bassist Neil Murray to look for a suitable drummer; the choice finally fell on Aynsley Dunbar . A sound engineer was found at Bob Rock , a friend of Coverdale's.
Unfortunately Coverdale fell ill with sinusitis and had to complete a six-month rehabilitation program, so that work on the album largely came to a standstill. Sykes therefore suggested looking for a replacement for Coverdale, but the singer did not allow this, and instead they separated from the guitarist. After Coverdale finally recovered, he was able to devote himself to the vocal parts of the album. Don Airey and Bill Cuomo were hired as keyboard players, and the guitar work on the newly recorded version of Here I Go Again was done by Dutchman Adrian Vandenberg .
In November 1986 the album was finally ready. It was released in April of the following year under three different titles, each with its own song sequence: as 1987 in Europe (EMI), as Whitesnake in North America (Geffen / Warner) and as Serpens Albus in Japan (CBS / Sony). Not least because of the re-recording of Here I Go Again and the ballad Is This Love , the album developed into a great commercial success and went platinum eight times in the USA alone.
