1: 0 for you was the first TV game show by Peter Frankenfeld . It represented a great step forward for entertainment on German television. The show was always broadcast live.
Emergence
- prehistory
TV entertainment started in Germany with the colorful evening . It was a concept taken over from the Varieté , which consisted of a sequence of different performances announced by a conférencier . The individual items on the program were usually incoherent; they were mostly singers and artists.
The main disadvantage was the high cost. German television only had an annual budget of DM 12.5 million, which is why an artist who received DM 1000 for his performance had to act on stage for at least 6 minutes, since otherwise no full-length program could be realized. That's why, for example, artists were asked to do a little longer than their number was interesting. This is how the slogan The Colorful Evening is dead and whoever tried to find a convincing replacement had the chance to become extremely popular.
The radio equipment industry also pushed for modern forms of entertainment, since sales of television sets were disappointing and, from their point of view, this situation could only be changed with new shows.
- idea
Peter Frankenfeld noticed in his radio series Who last laughs ... that some games would be ideal for television.
In the show, as in the colorful evening, there were also artistry or singing performances, but they did not make up the main part of the show, but rather were there to allow the viewer some relaxation after concentrating on a game.
- preparation
The NWDR produced a test broadcast in its television center in Hamburg-Lokstedt . Frankenfeld noticed that the procedure, as with the radio conference, was causing unrest on the screen. When it comes to radio, it was beneficial to storm onto the stage and move around a lot. That is why the NWDR procured a program from the American television star Arthur Godfrey , who was sitting comfortably behind a desk and never became hectic. From then on, Frankenfeld oriented itself towards this.
All editions were directed by Ruprecht Essberger .
procedure
The optimal sequence of 1: 0 for you was found after just a few issues:
- begin
The show always started at 8 p.m. with the 1-0 melody, played by the NWDR orchestra. At the beginning the audience mail was dealt with in detail and interesting letters were read out and objects sent in were shown. Among them were numerous pennants and beer coasters, as Frankenfeld had once mentioned collecting them. Then the first spectator game followed - one round was called the Frankenfeld Complex.
- Play with selected spectators
The three required candidates were identified from the audience using a children's toy, a three-bladed plastic propeller, which was started with a hand-held device with a cable. Frankenfeld had several propellers in his pocket and spoke of flying saucers. The catching of these saucers in the stands usually caused a little commotion and a spectator then came on stage with the propeller. He had to name and occupation, with the moderator still asking for a few details to take the excitement out of him and make him stand out as an expert. This ability was a significant part of Frankenfeld's success.
Then a task had to be solved, for example to scrape foam off a balloon with a razor without it bursting, or to assemble furniture. The one who solved the problem best or fastest received a prize, the other two received a consolation prize. Walter Spahrbier was used for this award and offered a choice of dark and light envelopes. Both envelopes contained prizes: one was a rather inexpensive item like a goose or a package of down for a feather bed, the other mostly a trip. There were several of these games per broadcast.
- 20-question quiz
Each 1-0 for you issue was accompanied by a quiz for which viewers sent in a term. Frankenfeld drew the term and a well-known athlete, singer or actor had to guess what he was allowed to ask 20 questions about. If the term was not guessed, the sender received a prize, otherwise a viewer in the hall received the prize - the criteria by which this viewer was selected varied from broadcast to broadcast.
- Show part
To separate the individual game blocks, there were entertainers, the Frankenfeld announced.
- Charity
The edition of July 17, 1955 came from Berlin and also had the special title 1-0 from Berlin . With her began Frankenfeld's commitment to charity, which in 1970 led to the Federal Cross of Merit. Frankenfeld kept getting mail from viewers who would like to invite him to stay overnight. He then suggested that instead of taking in Berlin children, which met with great enthusiasm and was implemented together with the Berlin relief organization.
Audience response
- Telephone poll
In the telephone audience survey, in which the participants had to rate a program in the range of −10 to +10, "1: 0 for you" was unusually often given the extremely high value of +10, so that it was soon given up on the audience Interview broadcast.
- Ticket sales
The show took place in large halls. The tickets cost 2 DM to 6 DM and were usually all given out an hour after advance sales began.
- be right
Peter von Zahn found the show to be on par, if not superior, to the best American programs of a similar style. It is extraordinarily versatile and varied, I would like to say, cleverly structured.
filming
A Berlin production company shot the feature film Request Concert , in which Peter Frankenfeld plays himself. Directed by Erik Ode , a comedy plot was created around 1-0 for you , in which Bully Buhlan , Paul Dahlke , Germaine Damar , Renate Holm and Georg Thomalla also participated.
The End
- Circus variant
From August 1, 1955, Peter Frankenfeld went on tour for you in the circus tent with a 1-0 win for three months. Because the NWDR, as an institution under public law, was not allowed to act as an organizer, the Collien Concert Directorate organized a three-hour program, of which one hour and 20 minutes were available to Frankenfeld.
- Latest edition
The television director of the NWDR Werner Pehmen adhered to the rule that a series should be canceled at the height of its success. That is why he had "1-0 for you" carried out for the last time at the Great German Radio Exhibition in Düsseldorf. It took place on August 28, 1955 in the Rheinhalle. Frankenfeld continued his television activities after a brief hiatus with a similar show. During this break he flew to the USA to find out about TV events there.
