21 Gramm is the first studio album by the German rapper SDiddy . The album was released on January 11, 2008 on Eko Fresh's label German Dream and includes guest contributions from Eko Fresh himself and Capkekz , who also produced two songs.

Emergence

After SDiddy switched from Optik Records to German Dream, there were initially no concrete plans for an album. This all changed when SDiddy started recording his album after an accident at work in 2007 (he fell seven meters and broke his knees and pelvis), motivated by his accident and the desire to change his life.

It gathers songs from the beginning of his career in 1998 as well as current songs. Most of the songs were produced by Prodycem, Hakan Abi and Capkekz. A beat from the Stieber Twins , Ground Zero and Kingsize is also represented. Hakan Abi, G-Style, Capkekz and Eko Fresh are featured as features on the album.

As a harbinger of the album, S-Diddy released a music video for When He Goes at Christmas 2007 . The album was released on January 11, 2008 via German Dream and is the first regular release of the independent label around Eko Fresh.

Music genre

The album is characterized by the production of German Dreams up-and-coming producer Prodycem. Due to the fact that many of the songs were older, the album made a slightly confused impression. S.Diddy used an idiosyncratic rap style that was repeatedly compared to the American rapper Eminem . On this album he uses his characteristic, somewhat confused flow, which arises from the fact that he freestyle raps many songs first . Although he says he refrained from drugs on this album, there are some songs that deal with excessive drug use. Other texts deal with his aversion to German celebrities. The album also contains some serious passages resulting from the processing of his work accident. So is the song Wenn er geht about suicidal thoughts, a topic that was neglected in German rap at the time.

21 grams was received mostly positively by critics, Jasha P. from HipHop.bz wrote: “SD moves hard on the border between genius and madness, whatever pleases and what makes him. But also quiet / thoughtful titles like Hopeless can convince and fit perfectly into the overall picture without appearing superimposed, which is supported not least by the excellently produced beats. I couldn't make out total failures or the like on the sound carrier. "

The review by Tiziana (rap.de) was also positive. Among other things, she praised the “attention to detail and language and the aversion to static and variation-free rappatters”. Unnecessary features and the selection of beats for individual songs were criticized. “For me, 21 grams is an amazing first work by an artist who has raised the bar for style and innovation in German rap a bit higher. If Diddy doesn't 'go down like bones in a pyranja basin' and sink into the drug swamp, he'll soon be playing in the German rap league, for sure. "

Above all, the skits and the length of the songs were criticized on Rappers.in. Otherwise the album was also rated positively: “With '21 grams', SDiddy delivers a more than audible album and again shows that he was rightly supported by people like Savas. The strengths of the tape easily compensate for the much smaller weaknesses ”.

In retrospect, however, Rap.de described the album as "mixed" because, in the opinion of the reviewer, it had a lack of structures and was too chaotic for the entire duration of the album.
