3 Words (German: 3 words ) is a song by British singer Cheryl Cole in collaboration with the Black Eyed Peas -member Will.i.am . It was released in December 2009 as the second single from their album of the same name, in Germany in June of the following year.

Compared to its predecessor Fight for This Love , 3 Words was less successful, but also reached the top 5 of the British single charts and was awarded silver.

Background information

3 Words is an up-tempo synthpop and dance pop song , with vocals by Cheryl Cole and Will.i.am, who produced the song and co-wrote it with Cole and George Pajon. The song is written in C sharp minor and is an up-tempo song with 129 beats per minute. The lack of a classical refrain in the song is very noticeable; instead, calm passages with guitar and piano alternate with the beats from the synthesizer, which symbolize the refrain. The chord progression is relatively sparse, but still complex: C sharp minor − G sharp minor − C sharp − A major − C sharp. Cole's vocal range in the song ranges from G sharp 3 to B flat 4 .

Critics noted that the song was difficult to define in terms of genre. Cole agreed and said the song was "unlike anything I've done or liked before." She named 3 Words her favorite song on the album.

Music video

The music video for 3 Words was shot by Vincent Haycock during the week of October 19th. It premiered on November 27th. The video has been described as "completely different from the Fight For This Love video ." The second official split screen video was directed by Saam. Cheryl Cole appears in the video in several different outfits. In one scene she wears a “ Lady Gaga- inspired platinum blonde wig”, in another she appears as the “Egyptian goddess”. According to Lisa McGarry of Unreality TV , the video is “weird,” but she noted, “Even if it doesn't look good, it looks shocking at least.” In the rest of the music video, Will.I.Am is seen sitting on the floor , later some dancers moving to the music. These were described as "dance scenes with interspersed sequences", "in which the video focuses on the two main actors who seem to be looking for each other".

promotion

The song's world radio premiere took place on October 13, 2009 on BBC Radio 1's Chris Moyles Show . Cole first performed the song live on Cheryl Cole's Night In on ITV .
