4-chloromercuric benzoic acid is an organic mercury compound that is used as a protease inhibitor , primarily in biochemistry .

Biochemical properties

PCMB reacts with SH groups ( thiol groups ) in proteins and is thus an inhibitor for enzymes that are dependent on SH reactivity. It inhibits the cysteine protease papain , but also the acetylcholinesterase of mammals.

use

Due to its SH reactivity, it is used in special titrations to quantify thiol groups in proteins.
