The three story building for the Glasgow Gas Light Company was built between 1867 and 1870. The architect Robert Melvin is in charge of the design .
The building is on Virginia Street in the southeast of central Glasgow. The west-facing front facade is designed in the style of the late Italian Renaissance and is seven axes wide. The central entrance portal closes with a massive architrave and a roofing cornice on ornamented consoles with acroteries . Arched windows are installed on the ground floor . An ornamented frieze runs above the ground floor . The windows on the first floor are designed as aedicules with pilasters , architraves and triangular gables. The color-contrasting corner stones are rusticated .
