- Taranto forges an alliance with Rhegium to resist the Messapians , Peuketeers, and Lucanians , but the combined armies of Taranto and Rhegium are defeated near Kailìa. According to Herodotus, this defeat is one of the worst of the Greeks in southern Italy against the Italians .

- The drama The Persians by Aeschylus is premiered. It deals with the sinking of the Persian fleet at the Battle of Salamis from the fictional perspective of the Persian royal court .
