The 49er is the Olympic high-performance boat class for two men. The bow and helmsman stand on the wide wings in a trapeze and hold the boat upright with their body weight.
history
The 49er was designed in 1995 by the Australian Julian Bethwaite as a One Design Skiff for the Olympic Games . In November 1996 it was elected to the Olympic class by the International Sailing Federation ISAF , and was used for the first time in 2008 .
The name 49er is derived from the hull length (4.99 meters).
hull
The chine body In is narrow and shallow (Skiff), has a broad tail and wings, which can be removed for transport. The width with wings is 2.9 m. The total length with extended gennaker pole is 6.65 m. The fuselage is made of GRP and must weigh 94 kg with wings. Due to the solid workmanship, the hull is stable and resilient. An older hull is also competitive. Since the 49er is a one-size-fits-all and the equipment is precisely limited, the Skiff remains relatively stable in value and the effort for beginners is manageable.
Rigging, rigging, sails
A 49er has a self-tacking jib , a gennaker and a fully battened mainsail . The jib and the mainsail are made of transparent polyester film (brand name including Mylar ). The current sail manufacturer is Neil Pryde . The mast of the new rig has been made entirely of carbon fiber reinforced plastic since 2009 . The large tree is pushed down from above using a system of levers. The rig tension is always set using a pulley system before sailing on land. The re-trimming is carried out on the water on the turnbuckles ( rigging ). The mainsail is sailed directly from the boom by the bow, the jib by the helmsman.
49erFX
The 49erFX differs from the 49er in that it has a modified sail plan with a lower mast height and a smaller sail area ; the hull was taken over from the 49er. The 49erFX is designed for a crew weight of 120 kg (49er: 140 kg) and is therefore particularly suitable for female and young female sailors. It was used as a two-handed women's skiff at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro .
