666 (The Apocalypse of John, 13/18) is a concept album by the group Aphrodite's Child .

history

The album is considered one of the early cult albums in rock history and is still popular among fans today. It had minor hits with Four Horsemen and Break .

At first sight, the album is an adaptation of sections of the Revelation of John ( 666 ), but the lyrics and structure are very experimental.

Vangelis conceived the work in collaboration with the poet and director Costas Ferris . The music Vangelis wrote was far more psychedelic and progressive rock oriented than anything the band had released before. The music itself is impressive evidence of Vangelis' ability to combine psychedelic and progressive rock with ethnic instruments, a choir, and the sophisticated use of the synthesizer . The work was recorded as early as 1970 in the Europa Sonor Studio in Paris, which later served Pink Floyd for the recordings of Meddle and The Dark Side of the Moon .

Shortly before the release, a long argument with Mercury Records began over the content of the album. The music label particularly opposed the publication of the song ( Infinity ), the lyrics of which she considered obscene; In this song, the actress Irene Papas repeats the words "I was, I am, I am to come" over and over again in a more or less hysterical manner, while Vangelis accompanies her percussively - easily understood as the musical presentation of a sexual act . The fact that it could be released was thanks to the fact that it was possible to agree with the record company to reduce the length of the song from 39 to 5 minutes.

Ultimately, the album was released in 1972. Over time, it has been recognized as one of the most important early progressive rock albums and is considered a prime example of a concept album . Through 666 other musicians became aware of Vangelis, who in 1974 after the departure of Rick Wakeman got an offer from Jon Anderson to become a member of the band Yes .

Some pieces of the album were covered by the band The Bollock Brothers on their 1985 album The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse , but are not always properly identified there.
