99 Beautiful ( German  99 Beautiful ) is a German short film by Tessa Knapp from the year 2010 . In Germany, the film premiered on May 8, 2011 at the International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen .

action

The film deals with Turkish first names and their meanings. Inspired by the 99 names of Allah , Knapp asks laypeople in front of the camera to tell of their names. Allah is said to have had only one name less than 100 . During a stay in Istanbul , Knapp asked that acquaintances speak about their names. In 17 minutes she introduces various names and what those who wear them associate with them. The relation to reality is always preserved through the meaning. The film represents a relationship between the predetermined (the names) and the wanted (their interpretation).

Reviews

“The names go back further than the nations. The filmmaker creates a strict formal framework in which the names of Turkish people tell more about their lives than their immediate social environment. The work finds a highly plausible form at the interface between short film and installation. "
