The list of Turkish first names is a directory of first names in use today in the Turkish language area.
introduction
Until the introduction of the family name under Ataturk, a distinction was made between the first birth name ( isim ) such as Turgut or Aynur and the epithet ( lakap ) such as Topal (the limping). Furthermore, there was sometimes an epithet ( künye ), which contained the name of the father or the son, more rarely the name of the mother or daughter, such as B. Ebu Bekir (father of Bekir) or Ekrem-Zâde (son of Ekrem). Poets were known by their pseudonym ( tahallus ), which often ended in -î ( Fûzulî , Usulî or Bakî ). In traditional families, newborn babies are still given a so-called göbek adı (navel or belly name) when they are cordoned off.
Origin of Turkish first names
Turkish first names often have meanings derived from contemporary language. The meaning of such first names is then immediately apparent or can be looked up in the dictionary.
There are also many names originating from Old Turkish, the meaning of which cannot always be determined from a modern dictionary, especially when it comes to amalgamating several Old Turkish words. Names from Turkic languages other than Turkish or from Mongolian are regularly adapted to Turkish. In this article, Turkish names are also referred to that are derived from geographical names in Mongolia (and adjacent areas), which is regarded as the Turkish original home, such as Altay (the Altai Mountains), Ötüken (a mountain range in Mongolia, whose property is in Old Turkish Time associated with prestige) or Baykal ( Lake Baikal ). However, these names often cannot be derived from Turkish (not even from Old Turkish). This also includes names from the early days of Turkish or Hunnic history such as Bumin , İstemi (the founders of the Old Turkish Empire), Attila (the Hun king), Mete and Teoman (the founders of the Xiongnu empire Mao-tun and T'ou-man ). The Turkish origin of these names is anything but certain, but they count as part of Turkish tradition in Turkey. The origins of these names are different. Some of them have been handed down since the immigrant era, but some of them only emerged with the rise of nationalism.
A large part of the Turkish first names are of Arabic or Persian origin. The names of Arabic origin are mostly religiously motivated; under which Persian origin, there are those from the pre-Islamic Persian rooted epic about the heroes of the Shahnameh arise. In addition, there are a small number of names of biblical / Hebrew origin, but were conveyed via the Arabic, the Koran.
General
Turkish first names are multifaceted. Nouns, adjectives and combinations of various kinds are used. However, whole sentences can also be used as names. Often the vocabulary used for names is also in use, familiar or at least known in the language outside of use as names.
Several Turkish given names are both female and male first names. Nevertheless, depending on their importance, they are more common in one of the sexes. To guess the gender based on the spelling or sound of a name is hardly possible. The Turkish language has no grammatically expressed gender, so the endings of Turkish first names do not provide any information about it. For example, unlike first names in German (e.g. Maria , Heidi ) , names ending in -i or -a cannot be assigned to the female gender for this reason alone ( Tolga , Necati are male names).
Turkish first names often have a still recognizable literal meaning than in German, from which the gender of the name bearer can be inferred. However, the name is sometimes based on a meaning that differs from normal language usage. For example, in today's language, the word "he" alone usually designates the lowest military rank. As part of the name, which then designates male bearers, it can appear at the beginning of the name (e.g. Erol or Erdoğan ) or the end (e.g. Caner or Şener ) and then generally designates a man with traditional positive male characteristics (courageous, brave, etc.). The syllable -ol at the end of the word suggests a male first name, since ol is the imperative of sein and commands are usually addressed to the man (e.g. Erol = be a man , Hürol = be free , etc.). In the case of names of historical persons formed according to these rules, however, their person is in the foreground. The name Alpaslan is supposed to remind of the Seljuk Sultan of that name and not just denote a hero with the courage of a lion.
Purely phonetic considerations can be misleading or just happen to be correct. Names that begin with Nil- are feminine given names (e.g. Nilay , Nilgün , Nilüfer ). These names are derived on the one hand from a name for indigo, on the other hand from the river Nile , and Nilüfer refers to the lotus flower that lives in this river. Names that end in -han are usually derived from the Turkish and Mongolian ruler title Khan . They therefore regularly suggest a male carrier, although this component occurs more in the names of historical or legendary khans (e.g. Metehan , Cengizhan , Oğuzhan ). With a corresponding preceding part of the name, a name in -han can also denote a female carrier. An example of such a first name is Perihan ( the queen of the fairies ), although the first part of the name ( Peri - the fairy) is also used as a name , albeit less often .
For names of Arabic origin, the rules for Arabic names apply, which are only briefly reproduced here. The 99 names of Allah ( Hamit , Aziz , Kerim ...), other names from Islamic history ( Ömer , Bekir , Fatma , Meryem ) and names of Islamic historical personalities ( Tarık , Emir ) are also given in Turkish. The Arabic form of the name Abd al- ( servant of ... <one of the names of Allah> ) becomes the prefix Abdul- / Abdül- in Turkish (e.g. Abdulkerim / Abdülkerim , Abdulhamit / Abdülhamit , Abdulkadir / Abdülkadir ). The Turkish form is more conservative than the Arabic. In contrast to the Arabic form used today, it preserves the old nominative ending -u from (al-) Abd and blends it with the Arabic article of the following word. For example, Abdu al-Kerim becomes Abdu'l-Kerim . Names ending in -ettin ( Şemsettin , Nizamettin , Fahrettin ) are grammatically Arabic constructs with a genitive connection. They are derived from honorary names given as an award for services to the faith ( din ) and therefore regularly designate male carriers.
In the case of names that come from Arabic, the gender of the bearer can sometimes be deduced because Arabic, in contrast to Turkish, has a grammatical male or female gender. The latter is often recognizable by the final on -a, but mostly on -e, e.g. B. Fatma, Fadime, Ayşe. This is evident in names that are derived from adjectives, where male / female double forms can exist, e.g. B. Cemil (male) and Cemile (female). However, this cannot be relied on with any certainty, because an ending on -a does not necessarily represent a gender mark, cf. about Taha. Some words have a grammatical feminine gender in Arabic as well, although they denote masculine persons. An example of this is Halife, the caliph.
The name of the Islamic prophet Mohammed has a special position in Turkish. It is given mainly in the modified form Mehmet . Behind originally put intend the name Muhammad (or türkisiert Muhammet ) not to award random, since one can not know whether the child this name will not be unjust. In its modified form Mehmet , this name could be given without hesitation. Today the name is naturalized in the form Mehmet without the thought given here being behind it.
In some cases, given first names provide information about the family's cultural background, but this is not the rule. Religiously minded families tend to use Islamic (Arabic / Hebrew) names, nationally minded families tend to use Turkish and Old Turkish names. The names Ali or Cem are more common in Alevi families .
The short film 99 Beautiful by Tessa Knapp from 2010 is about Turkish first names.
Pet forms
There are different types of nicknames in Turkish. A few Turkish names are sometimes abbreviated in everyday life, as is the case with some German first names. Examples are Musti (from Mustafa), Yase (from Yasemin), Kübi (from Kübra) or Mel (from Melisa or Melis).
Another nickname is given names ending in -oş / -osch / -osh, which are particularly widespread among female first names. Examples are Diloş / Dilosh (e.g. from Dilara or Dilan), Seloş / Selosh (e.g. from Selin or Selina) or Iloş / Ilosh (from Ilayda). The name Ilayda z. B. can also be abbreviated as Ilay, Illy or Ila (a). The same applies to other Turkish first names.
In addition, a pet form can be formed in Turkish by adding -cık, -cik, -cuk, -cük according to the rules of the great vowel harmony. (Names ending in -ç, -f, -h, -k, -p, -s, -ş, -t have the suffix -çık, -çik, -çuk, -çük). For example, Okan would be Okancık , Gönül would be Gönülcük , Ayşe would be Ayşecik, and Yusuf would be Yusufçuk . A less common nickname is created by the addition -cağız / -ceğiz. The small vowel harmony applies to this pet form. (For names that end in the letters listed above, the addition is -çağız, -çeğiz).
Family forms of male first names, which are two-syllable (possibly shortened) and end in -o, are close to the pet forms. İbrahim becomes Ibo, Mehmet becomes Memo, Ali becomes Alo (because of the synchronicity with alo, German: Hello can be the starting point for puns), Hasan into Haso, Cemil into Cemo or Süleyman into Sülo. Numerous German rappers with roots in Turkey also use these nicknames as their stage names. Examples are the rappers Ufo361 , Eno , Fero47 , Azzi Memo and Mero , with the latter's nickname being formed from his last name.
Male first names and their meanings
This article or section needs to be revised. Details should be given on the
talk page.
Please help to improve it , and then remove this flag.
All given names with an asterisk (*) are both male and female, but are more common among the male gender.
Given names with two asterisks (**) belong to the first names that have a female equivalent. Only first names of Arabic origin have a female equivalent. The equivalent in Turkish usually comes from the suffix -e or -iye (as opposed to -a or -iya in Arabic).
First names with three asterisks (***) have an equivalent in German, which occurs mainly in biblical first names. The German equivalent of these first names is given here. It should be noted that these names do not necessarily refer to the biblical model, but to a historical person who, as a Muslim, used the Arabic form of a biblical name. The name Eyup is the Turkish Arabic form of the biblical Hebrew name Job , but it refers to Abu Ayyub al-Ansari
