Daniel ( Hebrew and Aramaic דניאל Daniyyel ) is a biblical male given name of Western Semitic origin and means "God is / be my judge". The name is widely used in numerous other Semitic languages, such as Ugaritic , Assyrian , Old North Arabic and Old South Arabic . The best-known biblical bearer of the name is the seer and prophet Daniel .

The name Daniel was hardly widespread in Germany in the first half of the 20th century. Its popularity grew in the 1950s and 1960s. From the mid-seventies to the mid-nineties, with a few interruptions, it was among the ten most frequently given boys' first names of the respective year. Since then, its popularity has dropped significantly.
