Daniel von Moscow ( Russian Даниил Александрович Московский , Daniil Alexandrowitsch Moskowski ; * 1261 in Vladimir ; † March 4, 1303 in Moscow ) was Prince of Moscow from 1272 until his death . The son of Alexander Newskis was the father of Juris I and Ivan I. He is the founder of the Moscow line of the Rurikids and thus the progenitor of all grand princes from Moscow and Russian tsars to Fyodor I. As a guarantor of peace, promoter of the Orthodox Church and founder of the oldest Moscow monastery, who himself died as a monk, he is venerated as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church . His feast day is March 4th.

Life

When Alexander Newski died in 1263, Daniel, his youngest son, was only two years old. In 1272 he was granted the then insignificant Principality of Moscow from his father's inheritance. He took part in the intra-dynastic disputes over supremacy in the various Russian sub-principalities and the clashes with the empire of the Golden Horde , to which his principality was tributary . Whenever possible, he is said to have been concerned about non-violent compensation. In 1302 he inherited the Principality of Pereslavl-Zalessky from his nephew Ivan Dmitrijewitsch, who died childless, and which then remained permanently connected to Moscow and made a decisive contribution to its rise.

Before 1282, Daniel founded a monastery from his inheritance on the right bank of the Moskva , which he named after his namesake Daniel Stylites . After an eventful history, this Danilov Monastery is today the spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church and the seat of the Patriarchate of Moscow and all of Russia .

Daniel died after a short illness in the Danilow monastery; on his deathbed he took the Great Shima . Initially buried in the monastery cemetery, his remains were transferred in 1652 to the main church of the Danilow Monastery, built in 1565 ( Cathedral of the Holy Fathers of the Seven Ecumenical Councils ).

On the occasion of the Millennium of the Baptism of Russia , Patriarch Pimen I founded the Order of Prince Daniel of Moscow in 1988 , which is awarded for services to the spiritual renewal of the Russian Church. In the same year a nuclear submarine ( Project 671RTM ) of the Russian Northern Fleet was named Daniel Moskowski ; Two men of the crew were killed in a fire in this boat in 2006.
