Kleinurleben is a part of the community Urleben in the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia .

geography

Kleinurleben is located 4.8 kilometers west of the end of Bad Tennstedt in the direction of Bad Langensalza, a little away from the L 3176 on the L 2127 Großvargula - Kirchheilingen in the fertile arable area of the Thuringian Basin . The Klunkerbach, coming from Klettstedt , flows through the village to the east, where after 1.44 km it joins the Borntalsbach coming from Großurleben to form the Seltenraingraben . This in turn is called Öde from Bad Tennstedt and flows into the Unstrut in Straussfurt .

history

Kleinurleben was first mentioned in a document on July 15, 1289. From 1261, the extensive Urleben settlement belonged to the free float of Beuren Abbey in Eichsfeld . An economic yard of the monastery formed the administrative center of the place. At that time at the latest, Urleben was divided into the independent places Großurleben and Kleinurleben.

During the Peasants' War , the Urleben farmers went to the Weberstedter Haufen and were involved in the storming of Gräfentonna Castle . Mr. Berlepsch appeared as the landlord for both places . From 1571 to 1848 they were the owners of the manor house living . The place belonged to the Electoral Saxon Office Langensalza until 1815 and after its cession to Prussia from 1816 to 1944 to the district of Langensalza in the province of Saxony .

On May 20, 1974, the communities Großurleben and Kleinurleben were merged to form the new community Urleben.

Culture and sights

church

The townscape is shaped by the mountain church St. Marien or Beatae Mariae Virginis standing on a hill . The von Berlepsch family provided it with rich furnishings. These include some gravestones and family portraits as well as portraits of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Younger . The church also serves as a place of worship for the major residents, as there is no church in its place. The parish Urleben belongs to the parish area Großvargula in the parish of Mulhouse the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

Burial mound

The so-called Milk Island near the church is a burial mound that housed fire and body graves as well as horse burials. In the center was a fire-filled grave, next to it were stone box and skeleton graves that were occupied around 700. The burial mound was examined for construction work from 1966 to 1968. The burial ground was probably the reason for choosing the location for the church building.
