Dan Minor

Dan "Slam Foot" Minor (* 10. August 1909 in Dallas , Texas ; † 11. April 1982 in New York City ) was an American jazz trombonist of Swing .

Live and act

Minor played in a church orchestra when he was 15 and in a local band called Blue Moon Chasers the following year . In 1927 he became a member of Walter Pages Oklahoma City Blue Devils (the later Blue Devils ), from 1929 he belonged to the Blues Syncopaters , which Ben Smith directed. During this time he also worked in bands with Earl Dykes, Gene Coy, Lloyd Hunter and Alphonse Trent . In 1931 Bennie Moten brought him into his orchestra, in which he also stayed Moten's death in 1935 when Count Basie took over the direction of the band; from 1936 to 1941 he played in the Count Basie Orchestra . On December 23, 1938 he performed with this formation in New York City at the first concert From Spirituals to Swing . Since he played only a few solos, the memory of Minor is obscured by trombonists like Benny Morton and Vic Dickenson . In 1942 he played with Buddy Johnson , and during this time with Cab Calloway . 1945/46 he worked at Mercer Ellington , also with Lucky Millinder and Willie Bryant . In the 1950s and 1960s he mainly worked as a freelance musician. In the field of jazz he was involved in 71 recording sessions between 1929 and 1946.
