Daniel James "Dan" Howell (born June 11, 1991 in Wokingham ) is a British blogger . He became known through his YouTube channel danisnotonfire (since May 1, 2017 Daniel Howell) , which exceeded the three million subscriber mark on December 29, 2013. Together with Phil Lester , he has also presented the radio show Dan and Phil for BBC Radio 1 since January 2013 . The Briton currently has 6.5 million subscribers.

Private

Howell was born and raised in Wokingham , Berkshire . He has a younger brother. Before he started posting videos on YouTube, he had small jobs at retail chains Focus DIY and Asda . He attended Forest School before starting law at the University of Manchester in 2010 . After a semester, he dropped out of his studies to be able to turn blogging into a profession. In August 2011 Dan Howell and Phil Lester, who was also a YouTuber and presenter of Dan and Phil , moved to Manchester together. They have been living together in London since 2012 .

On June 13, 2019, Howell posted a 45-minute video in which he came out as gay.

Career

YouTube

Howell started making YouTube videos because he had been watching other YouTubers for a long time and was encouraged to do so by some friends, mostly Phil Lester, who uploads videos himself on his channel AmazingPhil . He uploaded his first video on October 16, 2009 under the title "Hello Internet". He was part of the Fantastic Foursome group , made up of British YouTubers Phil Lester (AmazingPhil), Chris Kendall (crabstickz), PJ Liguori (KickthePj) and himself.

In 2010 and 2011, Howell was part of the annual 24-hour live internet show Stickaid , which encourages viewers to donate money to UNICEF .

In 2012, Howell was part of the video series Becoming YouTube , a series created by journalist Benjamin Cook, which deals with the various aspects of YouTube.

In the same year Howell won the YouTube SuperNote competition and stood out from the competition with his team. He also writes a blog for The Huffington Post , where he writes about the creation process behind his videos.

Howell and Lester also worked together on the YouTube channel My Damn Channel , for which they developed and started the video series The Super Amazing Project , in which they uncover paranormal phenomena. As of December 2013, The Super Amazing Project had more than 490,000 subscribers. In December 2012, the two had finished the third season of the show and put it on the Internet. The leadership of the channel has been passed on to other YouTubers. To do this, they have taken over and integrated the Internet news segment into their radio show.

On November 12, 2014, the first video was uploaded to the “DanAndPhilGAMES” channel, which is operated jointly with friend and roommate Phil Lester. This already cracked the one million subscriber mark on March 5, 2015.

In March 2015, his YouTube channel danisnotonfire had more than four and a half million subscribers and his videos were viewed more than 324 million times. With his Twitter account, he cracked the one million follower mark on January 24, 2014.

On April 1st, 2015 the “DanAndPhilCRAFTS” channel was created, which was only intended as an April Fool's joke and contains a single video. If only intended as a joke, the channel reached over 150,000 subscribers within a week. The following year, on April 1, 2016, a second video was uploaded to this channel, also intended as an April Fool's joke, and on April 1, 2017, this previous trilogy was finally continued with a third video.

BBC Radio 1

In January 2013, Howell and Lester began working as presenters on a radio show for BBC Radio 1 . The show became known under the name Dan and Phil . The two YouTubers had previously worked with the radio station and produced videos for their YouTube channel and two Christmas programs. Howell and Lester hosted an interactive two-hour radio show with Dan and Phil , which could also be followed live by camera on the BBC website. Music requests were fulfilled and music videos filmed by the listeners and viewers were shown. Howell and Lester also regularly competed against each other in live challenges. Since November 2014, the radio show has been moved to Mondays and shortened by an hour. Howell and Lester have since hosted the radio show once a month, the first Monday of each month. On the Mondays in between, the radio show was presented by other, mostly British YouTubers. The radio show was also broadcast under the new name The Internet Takeover . The radio show is no longer moderated by Howell and Lester.

The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire and The Amazing Tour Is Not On Fire

On March 26, 2015, Howell and Lester announced via a trailer on Howell's Channel that they had co-wrote a book called The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire (TABINOF), which would be released in the UK on October 8, 2015 and March 15, 2015. Published worldwide by Ebury Press and Random House Children's Books October 2015. The book topped the General Hardbacks Sunday Times bestseller list after selling 26,745 copies in the UK in the first week of its publication, and it also became the New York Times bestseller on its young adult hardcover list.

In the same trailer, the two announced their theater stage show The Amazing Tour Is Not on Fire (TATINOF), which toured the UK in October and November 2015 and ended with a show at the Palladium in London . During the tour, they sang the original song The Internet Is Here , which they later released as a charity single for Stand Up To Cancer. They received a gold record for selling the song.

In 2016, they toured the United States and Toronto, starting with a show in Orlando, Florida on April 22nd and ending on June 24th with a show at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California. It was the greatest tour YouTubers have ever hit. They later toured Australia in August 2016, starting in Perth and ending in Brisbane, and ended the tour with a European leg, playing in Stockholm, Berlin and Dublin.

Awards and nominations

2012 Howell was by the readers of the online magazine Sugar Cape to Heißesten guy of the year selected.

For their radio show on BBC Radio 1, Howell and Lester were voted Britain's most popular radio presenters and Sony Golden Headphones Award winners.

In 2014 Howell and Lester were nominated for the Teen Choice Award for their joint video "The Photo Booth Challenge" on Howell's Channel.

In 2016 Dan and Phil jointly won Radio 1's Teen Award for Best Vlogger.

Also in 2016 they won 2 BONCAs Awards in the categories “Best Film” and “Collaboration of the Year”.
