Phil Lester

Philip Michael "Phil" Lester (born January 30, 1987 in Rawtenstall , Lancashire ) is a British web video producer , vlogger and radio host . He became known through his YouTube channel AmazingPhil . Together with his roommate Dan Howell , he has hosted the radio show Dan and Phil for BBC Radio 1 since January 2013 . In addition to the frequent collaboration on their own channels, both have had a joint YouTube channel called DanAndPhilGAMES since May 2nd, 2014 . On October 8, 2015, Lester and Howell published their first book, The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire .

Private

Lester grew up in Rawtenstall, Lancashire. He attended Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School with his older brother Martyn. He graduated from the University of York with a degree in English Literature and Linguistics and took a postgraduate course in theater, film and television. He has lived with his best friend Dan Howell since 2011. They lived in Manchester for a year but have lived together in London since 2012 .

After Dan Howell came out as gay in early June 2019, Lester announced on June 30, 2019 that he was also gay.

Career

YouTube

Inspired by famous channels like " Lonelygirl15 ", Lester uploaded his first video entitled "Phil's Video Blog" to his YouTube channel AmazingPhil on March 27, 2006 at the age of 19 . On March 14, 2017, its main channel reached 4 million subscribers. His second channel LessAmazingPhil , which he has operated since 2008, cracked the 1 million subscriber mark in June 2016.

In 2010, Lester and Howell took part in the annual 24-hour, live internet show , Stickaid , a UNICEF fundraising organization .

Lester also took part in the twelve-part web series Becoming YouTube by the English journalist Benjamin Cooks.

In collaboration with the YouTube channel My Damn Channel , Lester and Howell created the video series Super Amazing Project , in which they introduced and discussed supernatural events. In October 2014, both of them declared their work on this project to be finished in order to devote themselves to the broadcast of BBC Radio 1.

In September 2014, Lester and Howell released their first video on their gaming channel, DanAndPhilGAMES , which had 2,165,000 subscribers in May 2016.

Since 2015 Lester and Howell have also been running a channel called DanAndPhilCRAFTS , on which they upload ironic craft videos as an April Fool's joke every April 1st of the year . In May 2016, her channel had just under 597,000 subscribers and 3,671,000 views.

BBC Radio 1

From January 2013 Lester and Howell were presenters of the show Dan and Phil of the British radio station BBC Radio 1 in the program. Their previous work was limited to the production of videos for the YouTube channel of the station as well as two Christmas programs . The duo later interviewed artists such as Fall Out Boy at the Reading Festival, among others .

In August 2011, the end of the show was announced on Sunday and moved to the first Monday of the month with a shortened length under the title The Internet Takeover . This program was also canceled in April 2016.

Movie and TV

In 2007, Lester appeared as a candidate on the UK quiz show Weakest Link . He also played a role in the 2009 film Richard Hasenfuß - Held in Chucks (Faintheart) and appeared in an ad on confused.com.

Lester and Howell have been moderating the worldwide YouTube livestream of the annual BRIT Awards since 2014 , for which they also make backstage videos

In 2015, the duo also acted as the dubbing voices of Technician 1 and 2 in the British cinema version of Baymax . In the same year both also took on speaking roles in the Internet series Oscar's Hotel for Fantastical Creatures by YouTuber KickthePJ.

The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire and Tour

On March 26, 2015, Lester and Howell posted a trailer on Howell's Channel that they had co-wrote a book called The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire (TABINOF), which would be released in the UK on October 8, 2015 and March 15, 2015. Published worldwide by Ebury Press and Random House Children's Books October 2015. The book topped the General Hardbacks Sunday Times bestseller list after selling 26,745 copies in the UK in the first week of its publication, and it also became the New York Times bestseller on its young adult hardcover list.

In the same trailer, the two announced their theater stage show The Amazing Tour Is Not on Fire (TATINOF), which toured the UK in October and November 2015 and ended with a show at the Palladium in London . During the tour they sang the original song " The Internet Is Here", which they later released as a charity single for Stand Up To Cancer. They received a gold record for selling the song.

In 2016, they toured the United States and Toronto, starting with a show in Orlando, Florida on April 22nd and ending on June 24th with a show at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California. It was the greatest tour YouTubers have ever hit. They later toured Australia in August 2016, starting in Perth and ending in Brisbane, and ended the tour with a European leg, playing in Stockholm, Berlin and Dublin.

Awards and nominations

In 2011, Phil Lester set a Guinness World Record for the fastest stacking of coins, placing 25 coins on top of each other in 31.617 seconds.

Lester and Howell won the Sony Golden Headphones Award in 2013 for their show Dan and Phil .

In 2014 Howell and Lester were nominated for the Teen Choice Award for their joint video "The Photo Booth Challenge" on Howell's Channel.

In 2016 Dan and Phil jointly won Radio 1's Teen Award for Best Vlogger.

Also in 2016 Phil Lester won 2 BONCAs Awards together with Dan Howell in the categories "Best Film" and "Collaboration of the Year". Phil Lester also won a BONCA in the “British Creator of the Year” category.
