9Dragons is an MMORPG that was originally developed by the Korean software company Indy21 . For the European and American area, partnerships were entered into with Persistent Worlds and Acclaim Entertainment , with the European rights later being transferred in full to Acclaim. The first partially public game access was possible since September 2006 when the closed beta began. At the beginning of 2007 the Open Beta started at the same time in the various countries, but this was already advertised as a freely playable publication by Acclaim. The game was officially released in late March 2008.

Acclaim discontinued all of its games on August 26, 2010, including 9Dragons. It was announced that Gamersfirst will continue the English version in September 2010, while Games Campus will publish the game in German in November 2010 and in French in early 2011.

Game content

9Dragons is a Material Arts Action MMORPG, which is strongly influenced by Chinese mythology. It is the first game of its kind, which is based exclusively on the implementation of the wuxia literature , which is very well known and valued in Asia . In this case, the Korean author Jwa Baek provided the literary model, which was revised in the American and European versions by Steven-Elliot Altman .

The game content and the representation of the characters is very much based on Asian fighting styles. There are three basic factions in the game, the white clans like Wu-Tang or Shaolin , the black clans like Heavenly Demon or Sacred Flower, and the neutral clan, The Union of Noble Families. The clan membership has the same value as the choice of race in classic role-playing games , with only minor restrictions (for example the Sacred Flower Clan only has female members). The basic playful orientation is only determined by the player himself in the course of the game, that is, which role he would like to play in the game (warrior, healer, magician or hybrid ) is not fixed from the start. Each clan has the same basic roles to choose from, which do not differ. Differences between two identical roles in two different clans result only from the few skills that are passed on within the clan and from the weapons that are used in the respective clan. In addition, the clans are visually different from each other in every respect. The general character development is based on a learning-by-doing system, which means that the repeated execution of an ability increases it slowly, whereby the effectiveness improves from rank to rank, but a further increase proceeds more slowly. The game has a fairly open level system, the limit is level 240, but players can only reach level 216 at the moment. Due to the very high cost of reaching new levels and the very short reappearance time of opponents, 9Dragons is generally considered to be a game that requires a lot of time if the upper third of the level system is the target.

During the game you move in a 3D environment with a tracking camera. With a few exceptions, the names of the play areas are taken from reality and can be classified geographically in China and its surroundings (for example, Hefei and Tibet are accessible). Both PvE and PvP are offered, with the clans and their affiliation also making a simple form of realm PvP possible. The graphics and animation are very elaborate and well done for the time of development and are very much based on the cinema and television films in the wuxia style. Opponents and quest content often reference Asian legends and philosophies. There are also simple games of skill.

financing

In contrast to typical MMORPGs, which are refinanced via a monthly fee to be paid by the registered player, 9Dragons is a " free-to-play " game. This means that there are no fees after purchasing the basic game (which is also freely available on the Internet), but is only financed through the sale of premium items, which make the game easier and an advantage over those who do not have any money invest the game.
