Aýgül Täjiýewa

Aýgül Täjiýewa (born August 27, 1944 in Mary , Turkmen SSR , † July 22, 2009 in Sweden ) was a Turkmen politician and dissident .

Life

Täjiýewa was born in 1944 as one of five children in the city of Mary in southeastern Turkmenistan.

She graduated from a medical college and from 1961 to 1969 studied at the Turkmen State Medical Institute (since 2010 university) specializing in gynecology and then worked in various places in management positions.

In 1979 she was appointed chairman of the Turkmen Section of the Red Crescent .

Since 1990 she has been a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Turkmen SSR for a district of the Daşoguz Province ; At the suggestion of Saparmyrat Nyýazow , she was permanently active in the Committee on Social Policy.

After the end of the Soviet Union and the independence of Turkmenistan, she campaigned for budget reforms, the fight against land salinization, electoral reforms in higher political offices (including the presidency), pension reforms and recognition of the opposition. For Nyýazow she became an "enemy of the people".

Täjiýewa was a member of the Agzybirlik democracy movement and worked with journalists from the BBC and Radio Swoboda , among others . She was also one of the organizers of a “round table” for the opposition and published a magazine. In April 1992 she was dismissed from all posts, her husband was fired, one of her two sons was de-registered, both sons were convicted and mistreated.

Since 2002/03 Täjiýewa lived with her family in Sweden, where she wrote articles for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty . She died in July 2009 and was buried near Stockholm.
