A. Le Coq is an Estonian brewery and beverage factory based in Tartu .

history

The Baltic German Justus Reinhold Schramm founded the first brewery in what is now Estonia in Dorpat in 1826 . Fifty years later, his son Eduard Anton Justus Schramm began building one of the most modern breweries in the Russian Empire , which was inaugurated in Dorpat in 1875. In 1884 the company was sold to the entrepreneur Moritz Friedrich, who expanded it further. In 1898 the company was named Actien-Gesellschaft der Bier- und Meth-Brauerei und Distillatur Tivoli . The company received the gold medal at the Livonian industrial fairs of 1903 and 1910.

The company was founded in 1913 by the Public Company A. Le Coq & Co acquired.

The Le Coq family originally consisted of Huguenots who fled to Prussia in the 17th century from religious persecution from Metz ( Lorraine ) after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685 .

Jean Louis Albert Le Coq (1800–1875) was the son of the merchant and consul Jean Pierre Le Coq from Hamburg (1768–1800). Many sources, going back at least to 1939, claim the family business was founded as A Le Coq & Co in 1807 when Jean Ludwig Albert was only seven years old. However, it is not clear when the winery in Kempten near Bingen was taken over. In any case, Albert lived in Kempten in 1827 when his oldest child, André Augusté, was born there. He was married to Anna Maria Wittus from Trier. Sometime in the 1830s, Albert Le Coq moved to London, apparently to set up a trade for the family wine company in Great Britain. Within a few years, if not before, Le Coq had expanded from wine to exporting beer, particularly porters and stouts.

The “Imperial Extra Double Stout” with an alcohol content of 9% became world famous. The beer is now brewed by Harvey & Sons of Sussex, England, under the supervision of the Board of Trustees of A. Le Coq and the Tartu Brewery in Estonia.

In 1851 Le Coq became a British citizen.

After the death of Jean Ludwig Albert Le Coq, his son André Auguste Le Coq was no longer interested in the London beer export business. In 1881 the London export business was sold to Oscar Sillem, although it continued to operate under the name A Le Coq.

In 1913, A Le Coq took over the brewery in Estonia. The aim of the takeover was to achieve a better position for A. Le Coq on the Russian market. With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the company was expropriated and renamed Tartu Õlletehas . It remained one of the most popular brands of beer and mineral water in the Soviet Union. When Estonian regained independence, it was privatized again in 1995.

A. Le Coq is wholly owned by the Finnish brewery group Olvi . The AS A. Le Coq Group also includes the beverage and food companies OÜ Saare Õlu, AS Ösel Foods AS in Estonia, Cēsu Alus in Latvia and Ragutis AB in Lithuania .
