A1 Bulgaria (formerly Mobitel , bulg. : Мобилтел - also known as M-Tel (bulg .: М-тел)) is a telephone company that GSM - and UMTS nets in Bulgaria operates (GSM network code: 284-01, UMTS network code: 284-03). The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Telekom Austria , which is active in a total of eight countries in Central and Eastern Europe. With a market share of 50.1 percent, A1 Bulgaria is the leading Bulgarian mobile communications provider.

history

The company was founded in 1994 and started commercial operations in September 1995 with what was then the first digital cellular network in Bulgaria. Starting in 2002, it was restructured by an Austrian consortium of entrepreneurs around Martin Schlaff . In July 2005 mobilkom austria AG acquired 100% of Mobiltel and was able to successfully complete the integration in 2006. On July 8, 2010, mobilkom austria AG was merged with Telekom Austria TA AG . In the course of this merger, the non-Austrian subsidiaries of mobilkom austria AG were subordinated to Telekom Austria. For this reason, Mobiltel has been a 100 percent subsidiary of Telekom Austria since 2010 .

In May 2018 the company was renamed to its current name.

Companies

According to its own information, A1 Bulgaria currently has around 5.3 million customers, which corresponds to a market share of around 50.1 percent. This makes the company the leading mobile operator in Bulgaria. Commercial operation of its own UMTS network began in March 2006. Since February 2007, A1 Bulgaria has also been operating a WiMAX network in ten Bulgarian cities with a symmetrical speed of one Mbit / s. The services have so far only been offered to business customers.
